Chapter 8 - The Woman in Accounting

Her name was Claire Bennett.
Fifty-three.
Chief compliance officer at Torres Commercial Group.
She had worked for Alejandro for eleven years.
Alejandro stared at the employee photograph.
He knew her.
Trusted her.
Had promoted her twice.
She wore glasses now.
Different hair.
Different surname.
But beneath age and careful styling—
Isabella.
Alejandro’s missing sister had been inside his company for over a decade.
Watching.
Waiting.
He called her.
No answer.
Her office was empty.
Computer wiped.
Desk cleared.
But one envelope remained.
For Alejandro.
Inside:
I wanted to know whether you became him.
No signature.
Alejandro sat down hard.
Mariana understood.
Isabella had returned not for reunion.
For judgment.
Had Alejandro become Rafael?
Had he repeated the corruption?
Had he built wealth from the same rot?
For eleven years Isabella audited his company from inside.
Then another note:
You didn’t know.
That single sentence broke him.
His sister had determined Alejandro was not intentionally continuing Rafael’s crimes.
But why never reveal herself?
Because Rafael was alive.
And watching both.
Rachel Monroe found Isabella’s hidden archive.
She had documented shell subcontractors.
Ghost payroll.
Fraudulent material invoices.
Illegal demolition contracts.
Someone had siphoned nearly eighty million dollars from Alejandro’s companies over twelve years.
Rafael.
Mariana remembered how proudly Alejandro had spoken about growth.
Some of that growth had created channels his father hijacked.
Then the investigation found something unexpected.
Mariana’s name.
Several shell companies had been opened using her identity.
She stared.
“I’ve never seen these.”
Alejandro went white.
Payments moved through luxury-shopping companies and charitable foundations associated with Mariana.
Someone had designed the fraud so that if exposed—
Mariana would look responsible.
“You brought Lucy home while this was happening.”
Alejandro nodded.
“That photograph wasn’t only threatening me.”
“It was warning you someone could connect my mother to me.”
“Yes.”
“And make it look like I helped hide her.”
“Yes.”
Mariana laughed bitterly.
Rafael’s plan was layered.
If the laundering surfaced, blame Mariana.
If Elena surfaced, portray Mariana as part of an extortion scheme.
If Alejandro investigated, destroy his marriage with the truth of his role twenty years earlier.
Everyone compromised.
Everyone isolated.
Then Samuel Jr. returned carrying something.
His father had given it to him before disappearing that morning.
A key.
Storage locker.
Inside they found financial ledgers.
And one recent video.
Isabella sat facing the camera.
“If you are watching this, Rafael found me.”
Alejandro whispered:
“Isabella…”
She continued.
“I stayed near you because I needed access to the company.”
“I told myself it was investigation.”
“Maybe part of me also wanted my brother back.”
Alejandro began crying.
Then Isabella’s expression hardened.
“But Rafael knows Elena is alive.”
Mariana felt cold.
“He knows where Alejandro took her.”
Lucy gripped Mariana’s hand.
The video continued.
“And he is coming for the one thing Elena remembers that none of us do.”
Mariana stared.
“What?”
Isabella leaned toward the camera.
“Who ordered the original construction-site meeting.”
The recording ended.

Everyone had assumed Rafael orchestrated everything.
Apparently, he hadn’t.
