Chapter 13 - Rafael’s Version

Rafael agreed to surrender the tape only if Elena came.

Police refused.

Mariana refused.

Alejandro wanted to go alone.

Mariana stopped him.

“No more private deals.”

The pattern ended here.

Authorities arrested Rafael outside the soup kitchen after locating him through surveillance.

He was seventy-four.

Thin.

Sick.

Nothing like the monstrous figure everyone carried in memory.

That made no difference.

He still faced kidnapping, fraud, conspiracy and other charges.

During interrogation, Rafael insisted Margaret Blake had not died naturally.

He claimed she was murdered.

By Victor Hale.

The tape supposedly proved it.

Investigators watched.

The video showed Margaret inside a hotel room ten years earlier.

Victor argued with her.

Rafael secretly recorded from an adjacent room.

Then Margaret collapsed.

Victor panicked.

But he never touched her.

Toxicology from her death had shown heart failure.

No murder.

Rafael had framed the footage to imply more.

Another lesson.

Images could lie through omission as easily as words.

Then Margaret said something before collapsing.

“Elena is alive.”

Everyone froze.

Victor replied:

“I know.”

Mariana stared at the screen.

Victor knew for at least ten years.

Why didn’t he rescue her?

Because, as investigators eventually discovered, he had.

Partially.

Elena escaped Rafael’s control twelve years earlier with Victor’s help.

Then she suffered another head injury in a car crash during the escape.

She disappeared before Victor’s contacts reached the hospital.

From there, she entered shelters.

Lost identity.

Drifted.

Victor searched for years.

Then stopped.

Why?

He believed Rafael had found and killed her.

Lucy stared at the video.

“You helped me.”

A memory returned.

Victor giving her money.

A bus ticket.

Telling her:

“Find Mariana.”

She never did.

Her memory failed before she reached Chicago.

Mariana felt grief deeper than anger.

Her mother had been trying to return for twelve years.

Close.

Always close.

Then Rafael asked to speak with Alejandro.

They met behind glass.

Alejandro said nothing.

Rafael smiled faintly.

“You built what I couldn’t.”

Alejandro’s face hardened.

“No.”

“You used my company.”

“I rebuilt it.”

“With my name.”

“I’m changing the name.”

That surprised Rafael.

“What?”

“Torres Commercial ends this quarter.”

Rafael’s expression cracked.

Alejandro continued.

“The legitimate businesses continue under new ownership structures after forensic review.”

“You can’t erase me.”

“I don’t need to.”

Alejandro looked through the glass.

“Everyone will know exactly what you did.”

That frightened Rafael more than losing the company.

Then Rafael revealed one final fact.

Isabella hadn’t merely worked inside Alejandro’s company.

She owned part of it.

Rafael transferred hidden shares to her years earlier as insurance against Samuel.

Isabella had quietly controlled twelve percent of Alejandro’s empire.

She could have revealed herself anytime.

Why didn’t she?

Because she was waiting for one specific event.

Mariana’s reunion with Elena.

Isabella believed only Elena remembered where Margaret hid the original victims’ compensation fund.

Not a ledger.

Money.

Millions meant for families of the people killed by unsafe construction.

Margaret had created it secretly.

Then it vanished.

Lucy stared.

A new memory surfaced.

A church.

A stone angel.

A sentence:

“Give it back to the people we buried.”

May you like

Mariana realized her mother had been carrying the location of millions intended not for her—

but for families whose losses had financed everyone else’s wealth.
