Chapter 5 - The Woman Mariana Had Become

Security locked down the mansion.

Mariana hated how quickly her home turned into a fortress.

Gates.

Guards.

Cameras.

Her children were away at boarding school and would remain protected there.

For the first time all day, Mariana realized something uncomfortable.

She had spent years judging people like Lucy from inside a world insulated by money.

Now that money was being used to shield her from danger.

Lucy had possessed no such shield.

At dinner, Mariana brought soup to Lucy herself.

No gloves.

No staff.

Lucy noticed.

“You don’t have to do that.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Because you think I’m your mother?”

Mariana hesitated.

“Because I treated you horribly.”

Lucy looked down.

“You didn’t know me.”

“That shouldn’t have mattered.”

Something softened between them.

Then Mariana asked:

“Do you remember me?”

Lucy shook her head.

“I remember loving someone.”

Tears filled Mariana’s eyes.

“A child?”

“Yes.”

“Me?”

“I hope so.”

It wasn’t the reunion Mariana wanted.

But it was honest.

That mattered more.

Alejandro entered.

Lucy immediately stiffened.

Mariana noticed.

“You’re still afraid of him.”

“Yes.”

Alejandro stopped.

“Why?”

Lucy studied his face.

“Because I remember you shouting at Isabella.”

Alejandro went pale.

“What did I say?”

“You told her she was destroying your family.”

Alejandro lowered his head.

It was true.

He remembered now.

He had confronted Isabella before Hale arrived.

He had demanded she surrender the documents.

He told her exposing Rafael would destroy everything they had.

He had been twenty.

Afraid.

Loyal to the wrong person.

Mariana asked:

“Did you touch her?”

“No.”

Lucy said quietly:

“You grabbed her arm.”

Alejandro closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Mariana felt anger rise again.

Not because he forgot.

Because every layer made his old role slightly worse.

Then Rachel Monroe arrived with forensic news.

A cold-case review of unidentified remains had produced a possible match.

Female.

Age seventeen to twenty.

Recovered nineteen years earlier from a quarry outside Joliet.

Mariana looked at Alejandro.

“Isabella?”

“DNA is being expedited.”

Alejandro could barely speak.

Then Lucy whispered:

“No.”

Everyone turned.

“That isn’t Isabella.”

“How can you know?”

“Because she was alive after the quarry.”

Silence.

Lucy pressed her palms against her head.

“I remember a room.”

“A hospital?”

“No.”

“House?”

“Basement.”

Her voice shook.

“There were cameras.”

Mariana froze.

“Who was keeping you there?”

Lucy closed her eyes.

Then whispered:

“Rafael.”

Alejandro’s father.

The man who had supposedly died twelve years ago.

Alejandro stared.

“My father died of pancreatic cancer.”

Lucy looked at him.

“No.”

“You’re confused.”

“No.”

Dr. Carter raised one hand.

But Lucy became more certain.

“I saw him years after the construction site.”

Alejandro’s face hardened.

“That’s impossible.”

Lucy whispered:

“He called himself Mr. Reyes.”

Rachel Monroe stopped moving.

“Reyes?”

She pulled out her tablet.

A shelter database.

A man named Roberto Reyes had volunteered at several homeless outreach centers for years.

Photograph attached.

Mariana stared.

Older.

Bearded.

Thin.

But unmistakable.

Rafael Torres.

May you like

Alive.

The photograph had been taken eight months ago.
