Chapter 14 - The Test That Was Never Meant for Ethan

They could have left.

That was Ethan’s first decision.

No heroic confrontation.

No attempt to outsmart the house.

Take Lily and go.

But the mansion locked itself down before they reached the driveway.

Security gates closed.

Electronic doors sealed.

Nathan tried disabling the system.

A backup activated.

Samuel swore.

“This isn’t William’s protocol.”

Ethan already knew.

Someone had transformed succession into coercion.

Yet Lily’s scheduled “test” was tomorrow.

Why trap them tonight?

Because the final answer was already inside the house.

They searched the physical Archive for Rachel’s encrypted file.

Mara found it.

One audio recording.

Password protected.

Hint:

WHAT ETHAN CHOSE BEFORE HE KNEW HER NAME.

Rachel.

He had chosen Rachel over the ledger.

Password:

RACHEL.

The file opened.

Rachel’s voice filled the room.

“If Ethan hears this, then everyone has probably accused everyone else by now.”

Despite everything, Ethan almost smiled.

She knew them.

“Claire will look guilty because Claire lies when she is afraid.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Nathan will look guilty because Nathan interferes when he thinks he is smarter than everyone else.”

Nathan looked down.

“Evelyn will look guilty because she believes secrets are safer than people.”

Evelyn’s eyes filled.

“And William will look guilty because William spent half his life becoming exactly the kind of man Thomas warned him about.”

Rachel paused.

“But none of them designed what happens next.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Rachel had discovered someone was rebuilding Thomas’s original succession experiment.

Someone obsessed with Ethan’s childhood decision.

Someone believed Ethan’s compassion had made him unfit to inherit the Archive.

Therefore the next successor should be trained differently.

Lily.

Rachel had spent years secretly disrupting the program.

The monitoring photographs were not originally surveillance for harm.

They were progress records.

Someone had been studying Lily’s responses to fear, loyalty, deception and authority.

Who had enough access to observe Lily from infancy?

Rachel answered.

“I wish I could give you a stranger’s name.”

Ethan’s hands tightened.

“But the person behind this has been beside us for years.”

The recording glitched.

A damaged section.

Then:

“He believes Thomas chose the wrong son.”

Ethan looked at Nathan.

Nathan recoiled.

“No.”

The obvious implication was Nathan.

The overlooked younger brother.

The son Thomas trusted with the Archive but did not choose as moral successor.

Nathan had motive.

Access.

Technical ability.

He had returned today.

Every line pointed at him.

Claire stepped away.

Nathan shook his head.

“Ethan, I swear—”

Ethan raised a hand.

“Stop.”

Not because he believed Nathan.

Because he refused to repeat the pattern.

“What does the evidence actually prove?”

Nathan had helped modernize the Archive.

True.

He had manipulated clues today.

True.

He resented Thomas.

True.

None proved he targeted Lily.

Rachel’s recording resumed after the damaged section.

“…Nathan will think I mean him.”

Nathan stared.

Rachel had anticipated even that.

“I don’t.”

A collective exhale.

“The wrong son was not Nathan.”

Ethan frowned.

Thomas had only two sons.

Unless Rachel meant something else.

Samuel suddenly sat down.

His face had lost color.

Mara noticed.

“What?”

Samuel said nothing.

Ethan approached him.

“What did Thomas hide?”

Samuel’s eyes filled.

“Not another son.”

“Then what?”

“Another father.”

The room went silent.

Thomas Mercer was not Nathan’s biological father.

Nathan already knew.

He had discovered it years ago.

That was not the secret.

Samuel continued.

Thomas was not Ethan’s biological father either.

Ethan stared.

Impossible.

Samuel opened an old file.

Ethan’s mother had been pregnant when she married Thomas.

Thomas raised Ethan as his own.

The biological father was another Archive engineer.

A man Thomas later erased from every official project record after accusing him of abusing Ethical Masking.

“What was his name?”

Samuel looked toward the basement.

“Gabriel Reed.”

Ethan’s eyes moved slowly back to Samuel.

Reed.

Samuel Reed.

Samuel’s expression broke.

“Gabriel was my brother.”

Ethan stared at the elderly man who had supposedly arrived to stop the succession test.

Samuel whispered:

“And he never died.”

A slow clap came from the doorway.

Everyone turned.

An elderly man stood there.

Gray hair.

Brown shoes.

Calm smile.

Lily whispered:

“That’s the man from the hallway.”

Ethan knew before Samuel said the name.

Gabriel Reed.

His biological father.

Gabriel looked at Lily.

Then at Ethan.

“You saved Rachel when Thomas told you to save the Archive.”

May you like

His smile faded.

“Tomorrow we find out whether your daughter inherited the same weakness.”
