Chapter 13 - What Rachel Discovered

The video ended before Mara explained.

Nathan immediately traced the feed.

Local.

Inside the property.

They found Mara in an unused guest cottage beyond the garden.

Alone.

No restraints.

No captor.

Again, the image had created an assumption the wider scene did not support.

The hand on her shoulder?

A mannequin arm positioned outside frame.

Mara had staged the video.

Ethan’s anger erupted.

“You told me someone was standing behind you.”

“No.”

“You wanted me to think it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I needed you to understand how easy it is.”

The answer stopped him.

Mara had spent three years studying Rachel’s files.

She discovered the Curator did not need sophisticated lies.

A camera angle.

A missing minute.

A hand without a body.

The observer completed the deception.

“You said I discovered the Curator.”

“Rachel did.”

“And she thought it was me?”

“No.”

Mara gave him a folder.

Rachel’s final investigation.

The Curator was not one mastermind.

That was the revelation Rachel had died trying to preserve.

The role had changed hands repeatedly.

Thomas curated evidence to protect Diane.

William curated it to protect witnesses.

Diane curated it to stop William abusing the Archive.

Claire withheld information to protect Ethan.

Nathan interfered with clues to protect Lily.

Evelyn hid the ledger to protect identities.

Rachel manipulated records to protect her family.

Each person became the Curator whenever they decided someone else could not be trusted with the whole truth.

The conspiracy had survived because everyone believed their own withholding was morally different.

Ethan stared at the pages.

“So there is no mastermind.”

Mara shook her head.

“That’s not what Rachel discovered.”

There was still someone exploiting the pattern deliberately.

Someone who understood that everyone else would naturally hide information.

That person rarely needed to act.

They only needed to know what each person would conceal.

“Who?”

Mara had not found the name.

Rachel had.

But she encrypted it.

The key was something Ethan had forgotten from childhood.

The memory Thomas suppressed.

The fire.

The girl.

Rachel.

Ethan returned mentally to that night.

Smoke.

A locked door.

Someone shouting.

He had always remembered William pulling him out.

But another fragment emerged.

Thomas standing outside.

Not rushing toward the fire.

Arguing with someone.

A woman.

Evelyn?

No.

Diane.

Claire’s mother.

Ethan remembered Diane screaming:

“You made him choose!”

Choose what?

He closed his eyes.

A little girl crying inside.

Another room containing boxes.

Thomas had told twelve-year-old Ethan:

“Get the ledger.”

But Ethan heard Rachel.

He abandoned the records and rescued her.

Little Hawk catches what people throw away.

The phrase.

Not William’s.

Thomas’s.

Ethan opened his eyes.

His father had been testing him even then.

The succession test was not William’s invention.

Thomas had started it with a twelve-year-old boy.

Evelyn looked devastated.

“I didn’t know.”

Samuel did.

His silence revealed it.

Ethan turned.

“You knew.”

Samuel nodded.

Thomas believed systems of power needed custodians with moral judgment.

He tested Ethan.

The fire itself was accidental.

But Thomas had told Ethan to save records before people.

Ethan disobeyed.

He saved Rachel.

Thomas later called that proof Ethan was the right successor.

Ethan felt sick.

“My father turned a child’s terror into a character test.”

“Yes.”

The Archive’s deepest sickness had begun with Thomas’s certainty that he could decide what suffering was justified for a larger purpose.

Every generation repeated it.

Claire’s staged basement.

Nathan’s false clues.

Mara’s deceptive video.

All inherited the same logic.

Manipulation for protection.

Ethan finally understood why Rachel feared the succession.

She did not want Ethan to become Thomas.

But someone else did.

Lily entered the cottage holding Samuel’s tablet.

“It says tomorrow.”

The succession file had updated.

SEPTEMBER 18 — 3:17 P.M.

Exactly the timestamp on the supposedly future video.

A final event was scheduled.

TARGET: LILY MERCER.

Ethan’s blood turned cold.

Under it:

DECISION REQUIRED.

SAVE THE CHILD.

OR SAVE THE ARCHIVE.

The same choice Thomas had given Ethan at twelve.

Someone intended to recreate the test with Lily.

Claire whispered:

“They’re not testing you.”

Ethan looked at his daughter.

“No.”

May you like

He understood.

“They’re testing her.”
