Chapter 12 - The Person Lily Followed

Ethan did not panic.

Panic was what the sequence expected.

He forced himself to think.

Lily had been beside the garage doorway.

Three seconds of darkness.

No scream of struggle.

No sound of impact.

Only her startled cry.

Therefore she might have moved voluntarily.

“Lily!”

Nothing.

Nathan checked the service corridor.

Claire ran upstairs.

Evelyn stayed near the Archive.

Ethan noticed that distribution.

Exactly what a planner would predict.

Separate everyone.

He changed it.

“Everybody upstairs. Together.”

They searched as a group.

Lily’s pink bow lay near the library.

Then another beside the staircase.

A trail.

Too obvious.

Ethan refused to follow it.

Instead he went in the opposite direction.

Claire understood.

“Someone wants us upstairs.”

“Yes.”

They returned to the basement.

Behind the original Archive room was another narrow door.

Rachel’s key opened it.

Inside sat Lily.

Safe.

Confused.

Beside her was an elderly man.

Ethan lunged.

The man raised both hands.

“Easy.”

Lily said quickly:

“Daddy, he didn’t take me.”

Ethan stopped.

“He told me the lights were going out.”

The man had approached her seconds beforehand and told her where to hide.

He introduced himself as Samuel Reed.

Ethan recognized the name from Thomas’s files.

The engineer who helped build Ethical Masking.

Everyone had assumed Samuel died ten years earlier.

He had not.

He disappeared intentionally.

Another ghost created by the Archive.

Ethan almost laughed from exhaustion.

“Are there any dead people in this family who stayed dead?”

Samuel did not smile.

“More than you know.”

Samuel was the “nice man” Lily had seen.

He had given her the drawing.

He had also placed some of the clues.

But not all.

“Why?”

“To keep the test from completing.”

“What test?”

“Succession.”

Samuel explained that William had become terrified near the end of his life.

The Archive was too large to destroy safely.

Thousands of protected identities depended on it.

But leaving it uncontrolled was equally dangerous.

William designed a succession protocol.

It would identify someone capable of distinguishing truth from interpretation.

Someone resistant to manipulation.

Ethan.

“So William planned today.”

“Parts of it.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“He told someone to send me photographs of Lily?”

“No.”

“He told me to pretend I was trapped?”

“No.”

Nathan frowned.

“Then someone hijacked his protocol.”

Samuel nodded.

William designed a psychological test using harmless clues.

After William died, someone modified it.

Raised the stakes.

Brought Claire physically into the house.

Targeted Lily.

Turned uncertainty into danger.

“Who?”

Samuel looked at Rachel’s key.

“I thought Rachel.”

Ethan’s blood chilled.

Samuel had discovered Rachel accessed the succession code before her death.

She modified several parameters.

But he could not determine what she changed.

Claire whispered:

“Rachel wanted Ethan to inherit the Archive?”

“Possibly.”

Ethan shook his head.

Rachel hated the Archive.

Unless she believed Ethan was the only person who could dismantle it safely.

Again, motive could invert appearance.

Samuel produced the original succession plan.

No basement performance.

No photographs of Lily.

No physical danger.

Those modifications were added recently.

Three months ago.

Long after Rachel died.

Using Rachel’s credentials.

Someone had inherited her access.

Ethan looked at the crescent key.

“Who had this after she died?”

He had stored Rachel’s belongings himself.

But someone visited frequently during those first chaotic weeks.

Nathan.

Evelyn.

William.

Lily’s nanny.

Rachel’s sister—

Ethan froze.

Rachel’s sister.

Mara.

Quiet Mara Monroe.

She had helped Ethan raise Lily for almost a year after Rachel died.

Picked her up from school.

Stayed in the mansion after William’s funeral.

Had access to Rachel’s jewelry.

And Lily trusted her completely.

Rachel’s warning returned:

THE PERSON PREPARING LILY IS SOMEONE SHE ALREADY TRUSTS.

Ethan called Mara.

Her number was disconnected.

Claire asked:

“When did you last see her?”

“Three months ago.”

Exactly when the succession protocol was modified.

Nathan searched the laptop.

A hidden user account appeared.

M.M.

Mara Monroe.

Everything seemed to align.

Too perfectly.

Ethan stopped.

“No.”

Nathan looked at him.

“What?”

“This is what it keeps doing.”

“What?”

“Giving us a person at exactly the moment we need one.”

Mara had access.

Motive remained unknown.

Evidence appeared precisely when suspicion needed somewhere to land.

Ethan refused the conclusion.

“Find her. Don’t accuse her.”

Samuel smiled faintly.

William had wanted Ethan because of exactly that instinct.

Then Lily spoke.

“Aunt Mara didn’t give me the pictures.”

Everyone turned.

“How do you know?”

“Because I saw her crying about them.”

“When?”

“Before she went away.”

Lily remembered Mara finding an envelope of photographs in Rachel’s jewelry box.

She had looked terrified.

Then burned most of them.

Mara may not have created the monitoring.

She may have discovered it.

Nathan searched deeper.

The M.M. account was not Mara Monroe.

Its creation date was thirty-one years old.

Long before Mara had access.

Samuel stared.

“I know what it means.”

“What?”

“Mercer Mirror.”

The original backup administrator.

Not a person.

A role.

Anyone possessing the Mirror credentials could act under M.M.

Another false mastermind collapsed.

Then the laptop chimed.

A live camera activated.

A woman appeared on-screen.

Mara.

She was sitting in an unfamiliar room.

Alive.

Terrified.

And behind her stood a figure whose face remained outside the frame.

Mara looked into the camera.

“Ethan, don’t believe anything they tell you about Rachel.”

A hand rested on Mara’s shoulder.

She swallowed.

“Because Rachel discovered the Curator’s identity before she died.”

Ethan leaned closer.

“Who?”

May you like

Mara looked directly into the camera.

“You did.”
