Claire had never met Richard Blackwood.
Or so she believed.
She grew up in Ohio.
Her parents owned a small accounting firm.
No connection to Blackwoods.
Yet Nathan apparently found her name in a trust created years before they married.
How?
Eleanor suspected different Claire.
Common name.
But caller sent photograph of schedule fragment.
CLAIRE ELIZABETH MORGAN.
Claire’s maiden name.
Date of birth.
Exact.
Beneficial interest:
12.5%.
Effective upon verification of custodial transfer.
Claire stared.
“What custodial transfer?”
Her father had handled Blackwood Construction retirement-plan audits twenty years earlier.
Claire barely remembered.
Could Richard have placed shares in employee families?
Then she called mother.
Her mother went silent at Blackwood name.
There.
“Mom?”
Finally:
“Your father made me promise never to involve you.”
Not secret paternity.
Not adoption.
Financial whistleblowing.
Claire’s father, David Morgan, discovered Richard had improperly consolidated employee-held voting interests during restructuring.
He threatened report.
Richard negotiated correction.
Instead of paying David, he restored shares into employee stewardship vehicle.
David refused personal benefit.
But Richard allocated small contingent interests to several families harmed by earlier restructuring, including Morgan family.
Claire’s 12.5% wasn't of entire $84.6m.
It was 12.5% of one beneficiary pool.
Estimated current value:
$4.2 million.
Substantial.
Not empire.
Why Nathan hide?
He discovered Claire was beneficiary in same trust he believed Richard stole from his mother.
At first he suspected Claire’s father participated.
Then learned David was whistleblower.
Nathan intended tell her.
So why didn't?
Because beneficial schedule contained another name:
Eleanor Blackwood.
Interest:
0%.
Richard intentionally excluded his own daughter from disputed shares.
Eleanor saw.
Her face hardened.
“My father left me the house and cut me out of the thing I spent my life helping build.”
Motive.
But she hadn't known until now.
Then Claire asked caller:
WHY DID YOU MAKE HER CHASE ME?
Response:
BECAUSE I NEEDED TO KNOW WHETHER SHE’D LET YOU LEAVE WITH THE 1998 AMENDMENT.
“So this was a test.”
YES.
“And if she let me leave?”
SHE DIDN’T.
Claire looked at Eleanor.
But chasing Claire didn't prove murder.
It proved Eleanor still wanted control of damaging document.
Then caller sent:
NOW ASK HER WHAT SHE DID AFTER NATHAN SHOWED HER THE REAL SCHEDULE.
Claire did.
Eleanor’s face changed.
“I burned it.”
Claire stared.
“You destroyed the original?”
“No.”
“A copy?”
Eleanor shook head.
“The document Nathan showed me wasn't paper.”
“What was it?”
“A photograph.”
“Of what?”
