Chapter 4 - Eighty-Four Million Dollars

The number was not cash.

That was first important distinction.

$84.6 million represented estimated value of voting interests in three private companies once owned by Blackwood family.

Blackwood Construction.

Harrow Logistics.

North Vale Energy.

According to public estate records, Richard Blackwood sold most interests before death.

Eleanor inherited manor and remaining investments.

Nathan inherited little.

That had always created tension.

But Claire discovered something strange.

Richard’s sale proceeds never appeared in estate.

Instead shares moved through employee-benefit vehicles and holding partnerships.

Not sold.

Transferred.

Who controlled them now?

Unknown.

Nathan had spent two years tracing.

Claire found files on hidden cloud drive.

One repeated phrase:

BASEMENT ORIGINALS.

Original stock certificates?

Trust instruments?

Voting agreements?

Maybe steel case contained proof.

Then Eleanor admitted Nathan had confronted her.

He accused her of stealing inheritance.

She denied.

They argued.

Nathan brought case and said:

“If anything happens to me, Claire gets everything.”

Eleanor assumed threat.

Two days later he vanished.

Police looked at her.

She lied about meeting to avoid suspicion.

Cowardly.

But not proof of murder.

Then Claire asked why Eleanor chased her upstairs today.

Eleanor finally admitted.

She saw Claire taking photograph of a document in study.

“What document?”

A 1998 trust amendment.

Claire found Nathan’s initials handwritten on margin.

She tried leave with photo.

Eleanor panicked because amendment was supposed to have been destroyed.

“Why?”

“Because it’s fake.”

“Who forged it?”

“My father.”

That reversed everything.

Richard Blackwood had apparently created amendment making himself sole controller of family voting trust.

Original trust required employee trustees and descendants jointly.

If amendment forged, Richard’s later transfers could be invalid.

That meant current ownership of $84.6 million in shares uncertain.

Then anonymous caller texted:

ASK ELEANOR WHO REALLY BENEFITED FROM THE FORGERY.

Claire did.

Eleanor laughed bitterly.

“Not me.”

She produced her personal trust statement.

Eleanor controlled mansion.

Investments.

Approximately $11 million.

But not missing $84.6 million.

Then who?

The forged amendment transferred voting authority to Richard.

Years later Richard moved shares into something called BCF Stewardship Trust.

Current beneficiary field sealed.

Claire asked:

“BCF?”

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“Blackwood Continuity Foundation.”

But Claire had seen those letters before.

Nathan’s private notes.

BCF did not mean Blackwood Continuity Foundation.

He had written:

BENNETT CHILDREN’S FUND.

Claire stared.

She and Nathan had no children.

So whose children?

May you like

Then Eleanor whispered:

“Nathan wasn't a Bennett when he was born.”
