Chapter 14 - The Three People at the Pool
Months after the pool incident, none of them looked like they did that day.
Emma no longer wore wedding ring.
Ethan lived elsewhere while divorce processed.
Claire had moved to another apartment and was no longer seeing Ethan.
The clinic case entered settlement and regulatory phase.
No one “won.”
Emma had lost trust and a pregnancy she never knew was happening.
Claire had lost a pregnancy she physically experienced and then helped turn grief into destructive affair.
Ethan had lost marriage through choices he repeatedly framed as protection.
Then Emma returned to attorney’s office for final timeline review.
The pool video played.
Scene 1:
Claire approaches from behind.
Kicks Emma into water.
Why?
Claire had come to force Ethan disclosure.
Emma arrived unexpectedly.
Argument.
Emma called Claire a liar and turned away.
Claire lost temper and attacked.
Not self-defense.
Scene 2:
Emma emerges furious.
She slams water and climbs out.
Scene 3:
Emma slaps Ethan.
“You knew.”
She did not yet know what exactly.
But he knew about surrogate pregnancy, miscarriage and clinic problem.
Scene 4:
Emma grabs Claire by hair.
Claire yells.
Retaliation.
Scene 5:
Emma shoves Claire into pool.
Also retaliation.
Ethan tells stop.
Scene 6:
Ultrasound floats free.
Claire had kept in waterproof sleeve in dress because she came carrying original evidence.
Emma sees Ethan’s name.
Claire says:
“Ask your husband whose baby that is.”
Answer:
genetically Emma and Ethan’s.
Gestationally Claire’s pregnancy.
Then:
“Ask why date is before our affair.”
Answer:
because embryo transfer happened months before Claire and Ethan formed relationship.
Then:
“Claire... don’t.”
Answer:
Ethan feared original unauthorized transfer secret more than affair timeline.
Every visible question resolved.
Then attorney asked Emma:
“Do you want ultrasound entered into public filing?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Medical privacy.”
Good.
Not every truth must become spectacle.
Settlement documents could describe without reproducing image.
Claire agreed.
Then court finalized divorce months later.
No dramatic custody because no children living? They have embryo. Property division.
Embryo agreement remained:
continued storage one year, no use without mutual written consent/court order.
Emma later extended another year.
No rush.
Then Ethan asked once:
“If someday you want use it without me as parent?”
Complex. Genetic father rights. He said he would consider consent to relinquish parental intent if legally possible, but no promise.
Emma appreciated not deciding future today.
Then clinic issued written acknowledgment:
Cycle should have been paused after Emma Hayes’s cardiology clearance.
Transfer proceeded without adequate refreshed authorization.
Embryo EH-12 was transferred in error instead of EH-17.
Potential discrepancy was not escalated promptly.
All affected patients were notified after independent audit.
That was the truth Emma wanted.
No euphemism “documentation deficiency.”
Claire also got letter recognizing:
she underwent transfer under materially inaccurate embryo-identification information.
Her grief documented.
Ethan got no special separate statement.
He was participant, not primary harmed party in same way.
Then Emma visited Claire one final time? We already said no reason. Better no meeting.
They closed through lawyers.
Growth can mean separation.
Then Emma received one package from independent cryobank.
Not mystery.
Updated photograph of sealed EH-17 storage canister? Clinics don't send photo maybe chain-of-custody certificate.
Certificate.
She filed.
No obsession.
Then at bottom of old Austin Reproductive Partners records, attorney noticed another notation:
EH-17 was first stored in 2022 at a predecessor facility called Northlake Fertility.
Before Austin Reproductive Partners acquired it.
A migration note:

Missing from electronic chart.
Could this open new mystery? Need distinct after Ch15, unrelated to current? Could be not good because still embryo-related retcon. User wants distinct new mystery not invalidate. Better new mystery should be unrelated. We can open with Emma's late mother? None established. Maybe a property deed in Ethan's papers? Hmm.

Need Chapter 15 current solve then separate new mystery. Could use Ethan's family photo unrelated. Since characters minimal, perhaps after divorce Emma receives from old storage locker a sealed envelope belonging to her late father, not fertility. But no family background. Could introduce separate Greenstone House 2005. Need be distinct, not paternity or sibling. Maybe a childhood summer camp disappearance? Avoid hidden siblings. Use institutional mystery: Emma's late mother worked at Ravenswood Youth Home and left ledger. Fine. But no prior seed needed; new mystery only at end.
