Emma finally asked about that exact line.

Claire:
“And ask him why the date is before our affair.”
Ethan:
“Claire... don’t.”
What was he trying stop?
Not paternity reveal.
Not a secret older affair.

Ethan admitted:
“I was more afraid of you learning about embryo than affair.”
Emma stared.
“Why?”

“If pregnancy had survived, when would you have told me?”

“You imagined I’d be too happy to be angry.”
“Yes.”

He expected desired outcome to justify process.

If healthy baby arrived, maybe Emma would accept unauthorized path.

Then Claire said during deposition:
“Ethan told me Emma wanted a child more than anything.”
True.
But wanting outcome does not equal consenting to every method.

Then Emma realized why she slapped him before even knowing details.
“You knew.”
Her instinct was right, though she didn’t know what.

Then Claire’s smirk after slap?

“I wanted you angry at him.”

Clinic restructured under new medical director.
Then compensation.
Emma and Ethan reached no confidential blanket settlement initially.
They sought:
refund wrongful cycle costs,
storage correction,
counseling,
independent embryo transfer costs,
and non-confidential acknowledgement.
Claire separately settled medical/contract claims without gag on factual safety concerns.
