Chapter 1 - The Date That Shouldn’t Exist

“Claire... don’t.”
Ethan did not sound angry.
He sounded afraid.
That frightened Emma more than the ultrasound floating beside Claire in the pool.
Emma stood dripping on the pale stone deck, white dress clinging to her, one hand still half-raised from where she had slapped Ethan.
Claire remained chest-deep in the turquoise water.
She smiled.
“And ask him why the date is before our affair.”
Emma stared at the waterproof ultrasound.
The printed line was visible even through droplets:
PATIENT: CLAIRE MORGAN
INTENDED PARENT: ETHAN HAYES
GESTATIONAL AGE: 9W2D
The date was seven months ago.
Emma knew exactly when Ethan had admitted his affair.
Four months ago.
He claimed it had begun only six weeks before she discovered it.
If the ultrasound was real, Claire had been pregnant with a child connected to Ethan months before the affair supposedly started.
Emma turned.
“How long?”
Ethan opened his mouth.
Claire answered first.
“That’s not the right question.”
“Shut up.”
Emma stepped toward Ethan.
“Is that your baby?”
His face tightened.
“Yes.”
Claire laughed from pool.
Then Ethan added:
“And no.”
Emma stared.
“What does that even mean?”
Claire climbed toward ladder.
“Tell her.”
Ethan shook his head.
“Not like this.”
Claire’s smile vanished.
“You’ve had seven months to choose how.”
Emma picked up ultrasound.
It was not a cheap printout.
A waterproof medical pouch protected it.
The clinic logo read:
AUSTIN REPRODUCTIVE PARTNERS.
Emma knew that clinic.
She had spent two years there with Ethan.
Three egg retrievals.
Two failed transfers.
One frozen embryo remaining.
Her chest tightened.
“No.”
Ethan moved toward her.
“Emma—”
“No.”
She looked at ultrasound again.
A code beneath image:
EMBRYO: EH-17.
Emma stopped breathing.
She knew that code.
Ethan Hayes.
Emma Hayes.
Embryo 17.
Their embryo.
The last viable embryo from their final IVF cycle.
Emma had believed it was still frozen.
She had received storage invoices every month.
Claire reached edge.
“That baby isn’t mine.”
Emma looked at her stomach.
Claire was visibly pregnant beneath soaked dress? Prompt only curly-haired woman no pregnancy specified, but ultrasound. Could be recent ultrasound from prior pregnancy? Better if current pregnant? Prompt doesn't say pregnant. Could be pregnancy ended? We need current baby? Hmm line "whose baby that is" suggests maybe current pregnancy not visible. Let's say ultrasound is from pregnancy that was transferred months ago but Claire is no longer visibly pregnant because she delivered early? But timeline 9w2d seven months ago => now ~40 weeks, so she could be pregnant. Prompt didn't preserve pregnant belly though. Better make ultrasound date four months ago? "before affair" at 9 weeks means now maybe ~25 weeks but prompt not pregnant. Could hide under clothing? Yet scene says no. Let's instead ultrasound is not Claire's body; patient line could be gestational carrier file and pregnancy ended? Maybe ultrasound from a gestational carrier named Rachel. But Claire carries photo. Hmm.
Alternative: date on ultrasound before affair refers embryo transfer record, but Claire isn't pregnant now because transfer miscarried at 10 weeks. Then "whose baby that is" refers embryo identity, not current baby. That works. So Claire had carried Emma/Ethan embryo briefly before affair. Good.
Claire said quietly:
“I was pregnant with your embryo.”
Emma felt the world tilt.
Not Ethan and Claire’s child.
Emma and Ethan’s.
Inside Claire.
Before the affair.
Then another impossible question arrived.
“How?”
Ethan looked toward the pool.
“The clinic transferred it.”
“Why?”
“I didn’t know they had.”
Claire’s laugh came bitter.
“He knew before he touched me.”
Emma looked at Ethan.
“When?”
He didn’t answer fast enough.
Claire did.
“Three days before our affair started.”
The betrayal suddenly split into two separate acts.
