Chapter 5 - Eleanor Price
Vanessa’s mother was not secretly wealthy.
Not criminal mastermind.
Not hidden in mansion.
She was alive.
Seventy-one.
Living in a long-term psychiatric care community in Pennsylvania.
Vanessa had told Daniel she died young because she was ashamed.
Eleanor struggled for decades with severe untreated mental illness, unstable housing, and episodes of violence.
When Vanessa was sixteen, Eleanor disappeared for nearly a year.
Vanessa told classmates she was dead.
The lie stuck.
Later Vanessa financially supported her quietly.
Why did Margaret know?
Carter Foundation had funded accessibility renovations at Hawthorne Drive when Eleanor qualified for supported housing.
Vanessa handled case before she met Daniel.
She disclosed relationship to Margaret privately.
Margaret approved independent review.
No misuse.
So why did Margaret write Daniel must know if Easton reopened?
Because Hawthorne Drive held another record.
A 2017 incident report.
Eleanor Price had accused Vanessa of pushing her down porch steps during an argument.
No charges.
Eleanor later recanted.
Vanessa said it was a fall.
Margaret kept copy.
Now Daniel stared at his wife.
“One older disabled woman accused you of pushing her before.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“My mother was psychotic.”
“That doesn't answer.”
“She fell.”
“Did you push her?”
“No.”
Margaret suddenly slammed her hand.
Then pointed at Vanessa.
And mimed a shove.
Same gesture Lisa had made.
Daniel looked at her.
“You think she did?”
Margaret nodded.
But had Margaret witnessed 2017?
No.
She knew only report.
So suspicion, not proof.
Then Vanessa shouted:
“This is exactly what she does! She collects paper until everyone looks guilty!”
Margaret trembled.
Grace moved closer.
Daniel said:
“My mother can’t speak. Stop talking over her.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“She has been talking over me since the day you introduced us.”
That revealed another layer.
Margaret never trusted Vanessa completely.
Vanessa felt judged.
Daniel kept avoiding conflict.
Grace observed.
Lisa absorbed.
Then investigators checked Hawthorne Drive.
Porch camera from neighbor archived? Too old unlikely.
Medical report showed Eleanor fell backward, injuries consistent with fall but not enough to determine shove.
No proof.
Eleanor herself, now stabilized, agreed to speak.
She said:
“Vanessa didn’t push me.”
Daniel looked surprised.
Then Eleanor added:
“She grabbed my wrist because I tried to hit her. I pulled away and fell.”
So Vanessa had not assaulted her mother.
The old accusation was wrong.
Margaret had been mistaken to treat it as warning.
Good.
Then why current staircase?
Still visual evidence from two witnesses.
Lisa saw.
Margaret experienced.
No ambiguity there.
But motive remained.
Eleanor said something else:
“Vanessa panics when she thinks someone will take her home away.”
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Eleanor looked tired.
“When she was a child, every time social services came, she packed a bag.”
Vanessa stared at mother.
“Stop.”
Eleanor continued:
“She thinks losing a house means losing the family inside.”
Suddenly mansion transfer conflict looked different.
Vanessa wasn't trying to get rid of Margaret just for property.
