Chapter 4 - The Easton Account
Easton was not a person.
Easton Rehabilitation Services had once been a vendor for Carter Veterans Housing Foundation.
Ten years earlier, it renovated accessible apartments for injured veterans.
The relationship ended after billing dispute.
Daniel barely remembered.
Vanessa remembered perfectly.
Before marrying Daniel, Vanessa worked for Easton as development consultant.
She had told Daniel that.

she owned 12% of the company.

Margaret’s binder contained disclosure forms.
Vanessa’s ownership was legal.
But she had continued holding interest when she first began dating Daniel and volunteering with Carter foundation.

Then financial review showed Easton account had recently “reopened” not as vendor, but as claimant.

Daniel stared.
“You're still financially connected?”

“To who?”
“My former partner.”
Did she benefit from settlement now?

Independent records later confirmed she no longer owned shares.
So not direct theft.
Then why hide?
Because old dispute involved Vanessa’s signature on one questionable invoice.

Margaret had challenged it.

No criminal finding.
But Vanessa feared Daniel would see it as proof she entered family for money.

“I was twenty-nine and ambitious. I handled an invoice badly. Your mother never forgave me.”

Daniel looked at her.
“What part?”
Margaret opened binder.
She pointed to a photocopy of 2017 board memo.
Easton dispute.
Vanessa’s name.
Then handwritten note:
VANESSA WARNED US.
Daniel frowned.
Margaret was not accusing Vanessa of fraud.
She had recorded that Vanessa herself warned foundation the invoice looked wrong.

“You kept that?”
Margaret nodded.
Then why sticky note:
Tell Daniel before Vanessa?
Margaret tapped again.
EASTON.
Then:
NOT MONEY.
Grace looked confused.
Daniel too.
Margaret pointed to a page buried behind invoices.
A property map.
One Easton-renovated house circled.
Address:
1148 Hawthorne Drive.
Daniel stopped.
He knew it.
That was where Vanessa had lived before their marriage.
Not alone.
With someone named:
Eleanor Price.
Vanessa’s mother.
But Vanessa had told Daniel her mother died when she was sixteen.
The property record said Eleanor Price occupied the house until five years ago.
Vanessa whispered:
“This has nothing to do with your mother.”

“Your mother was alive when we got married?”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
