Chapter 2 - Samuel Ward

Samuel Ward was seventy-two.

He had worked for the Carter family for thirty-six years.

Daniel’s father, Henry Carter, trusted him with estate planning, business records, and foundation governance.

After Henry died four years earlier, Samuel stayed on as independent counsel.

Then six months ago Vanessa told Daniel:

“Samuel retired to Switzerland.”

Daniel had received a short farewell email.

Thank you for your trust. I’m stepping away from Carter matters permanently.

Daniel never questioned it.

Now Samuel’s voice seemed to be coming from behind a wall in his own mansion.

Police and fire crews arrived.

The steel door was not ordinary.

No exterior hinges.

No keyhole.

A locksmith found an old mechanical release hidden behind wood trim.

Vanessa watched them work.

Daniel watched Vanessa.

“How long has he been in there?”

“I don’t know that it’s Samuel.”

“You told me he was in Switzerland.”

“That’s what I was told.”

“By who?”

She hesitated.

“Samuel.”

Daniel took out his phone.

The retirement email.

Metadata review later showed it had been sent from Samuel’s account.

But from an IP address located less than three miles from the mansion.

Not Switzerland.

The door finally opened five inches.

A smell of dust and stale air escaped.

Emergency crews widened it.

Inside was a narrow concrete corridor.

Then a small room.

Shelves.

File cabinets.

A folding chair.

Bottled water.

And Samuel Ward lying weak but conscious against the far wall.

Alive.

Daniel rushed toward him.

Samuel lifted one hand.

“Lily?”

“She’s safe.”

Samuel closed his eyes in relief.

Vanessa remained at doorway.

Samuel saw her.

Fear replaced relief.

“Don’t let her touch the blue case.”

Daniel slowly looked toward shelf.

A locked blue metal document case.

Vanessa whispered:

“Samuel is confused.”

Samuel laughed weakly.

“No.”

Then he looked directly at Daniel.

“She knows exactly why I came here.”

Paramedics removed him.

He had dehydration and a bruised shoulder but no life-threatening injury.

How long had he been inside?

“Thirty-one hours.”

Daniel stared at Vanessa.

She denied locking him in.

Samuel said he entered room through old service access with a key Henry gave him.

He planned retrieve one document.

Then the steel door slammed behind him.

The internal emergency release had been removed.

By whom?

Samuel did not see.

But minutes before the door closed, he heard Vanessa speaking in storage room.

Daniel asked:

“What did she say?”

Samuel’s expression hardened.

“She said, ‘If he finds the original, I lose everything.’”

Vanessa exploded.

“He is lying!”

Samuel looked at her.

“Then open the blue case.”

Vanessa went silent.

Police secured it.

Daniel demanded to know what was inside.

Samuel answered:

“The version of your father’s will you were never supposed to see.”

Daniel stared.

“My father’s will was probated four years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Then what is this?”

May you like

Samuel glanced toward Vanessa.

“The one Henry signed three days later.”
