Chapter 13 - Daniel and Vanessa
Daniel met Vanessa without attorneys.
Therapist nearby.
He wanted one answer.
“Did you marry me because Rachel asked you to take care of us?”
“No.”
“Did guilt become love?”
“Maybe at first.”
That was honest.
She loved him.
Still.
Daniel loved her.
Still.
That did not solve.
He asked:
“Do you think Rachel wanted us together?”
“I used to.”
“Now?”
“I think she wanted us alive.”
Good.
Then Vanessa said:
“I spent years trying to prove I deserved the place she left.”
“There was no place to win.”
“I know.”
“Lily wasn’t vacancy.”
“I know.”
Then Daniel asked:
“Why did you fear Samuel?”
“He made me feel temporary.”
“Because he was protecting Lily’s trust?”
“Because he always said ‘Rachel wanted… Henry wanted…’ and never asked what I wanted.”
Samuel may have done that.
Daniel acknowledged.
“But that doesn’t give you right to destroy.”
“No.”
Then their separation continued.
No decision on divorce.
Vanessa worked individually.
Daniel worked too.
Lily’s visits none yet.
Then Samuel met Vanessa once.
He apologized:
“I treated you like risk category, not person.”
Vanessa answered:
“I proved your risk category right.”
“Both can be true.”
Good.
Then they reviewed $500k offer.
Samuel said if he had accepted, would archive disappear?
Vanessa:
“I wanted index destroyed, not all records.”
“Why index?”
“Because it told you which boxes existed.”
“And without it?”
“Secrets stay buried.”
That was intent.
Then legal counsel asked whether Vanessa had destroyed anything else.
She admitted one.
A duplicate Rachel letter.
Which?
“Take care of my family” full letter.
She had kept only last page?
Vanessa had received original letter from Rachel after death.

Vanessa,
Take care of my family by helping Daniel remember that Lily is not his possession and by helping Lily remember she is allowed to love whoever comes after me.
Do not become the person who decides what both of them need.
Vanessa destroyed it after reading.
Why?
“It felt like Rachel didn’t trust me.”
Then she held onto only small card:
Take care of my family.
She stripped context until promise supported what she wanted.
That was perhaps central emotional twist.
Daniel stared.
“So the sentence you built our marriage around was edited.”
“By me.”
Not forged.
Selective preservation.
Then Samuel found photocopy in Rachel box.
Truth restored.
Vanessa cried.
That was hardest admission.
Then Lily asked to see Vanessa after months? In Ch14 perhaps.
Before that, Daniel reviewed current legal status.
Vanessa had no automatic trustee power.
Independent council installed.
Brookside repaid.
Archive professionalized.
Samuel safe.
No immediate financial motive remained.
So core mystery resolved practically.
Then Daniel finally read Rachel’s letter to him:
If Vanessa becomes important to Lily, don’t make her apologize for being alive when I’m not.
Daniel had done opposite sometimes—
keeping Vanessa in comparison to Rachel.
He had contributed insecurity.
Again not excuse.
Then he called Vanessa:
“I made you compete with a dead woman sometimes.”
She cried.
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
That mattered.
But he added:
“What you did is still yours.”
“Yes.”
No cancellation.
Then Lily eventually agreed to five-minute supervised visit.
Vanessa entered room.
She stayed six feet away.
“I’m sorry I grabbed you.”
Lily said:
“You pulled my hair.”
“Yes.”
“You covered my mouth.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was scared you would tell the truth before I was ready.”
Lily thought.
“That’s bad.”
“Yes.”
“Don’t do it.”
“I won’t.”
Then Lily returned to coloring.
No hug.
