Chapter 1 - The Wall Behind the Wardrobe

Daniel heard Lily scream before he reached the storage room.
“DAD... SHE HID SOMETHING BACK THERE!”
He ran through the hallway.
Vanessa had one hand tangled in Lily’s hair and the other clamped over the six-year-old’s mouth, dragging her away from the room.
Daniel crossed the distance instantly.
He tore Lily free, pushed her behind him, then struck Vanessa across the cheek.
“GET YOUR HANDS OFF HER.”
Vanessa stumbled against a stack of boxes.
Lily clung to Daniel’s shirt.
“Behind the wardrobe.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“Daniel, she’s frightened. She doesn’t know what she saw.”
Lily pointed.
“BREAK THAT WALL!”
Daniel turned toward the huge walnut wardrobe.
He shoved.
The furniture scraped across the floor, then toppled sideways with a crash.
Behind it was a strange rectangular section of wall.
Different plaster.
Newer paint.
Daniel stared.
“What is this?”
Vanessa said nothing.
He grabbed the heavy hammer from the workbench.
“Daniel—don’t.”
First strike.
Plaster cracked.
Second.
A larger section collapsed inward.
Third.
Dark metal appeared.
Daniel dropped the hammer and tore loose plaster with both hands.
A narrow steel door stood behind the wall.
Old.
Industrial.
Nothing like the mansion around it.
Vanessa stepped backward.
“What have you been hiding?”
Silence.
Then—
THUD.
Daniel froze.
THUD.
Lily grabbed his hand.
THUD.
Three heavy knocks from behind the metal.
Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.
She had gone completely pale.
“You knew.”
“No.”
“You were dragging Lily away from this wall.”
“She’s been obsessing over it.”
“Because she heard something?”
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
Daniel reached for the door.
No visible handle.
Only a recessed lock plate.
Vanessa rushed forward.
“Don’t open it.”
Daniel turned.
“Why?”
“You don’t understand what this house was used for.”
That answer was wrong enough to make him colder.
“This is my family’s house.”
“Exactly.”
Lily whispered:
“I heard him yesterday.”
Daniel looked down.
“Him?”
Vanessa’s eyes closed.
Lily pointed at the metal.
“The man.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“What man?”
“He said my name.”
Vanessa interrupted.
“She was dreaming.”
Lily shook her head hard.
“He said, ‘Lily Carter, tell your dad.’”
Daniel stared at the sealed door.
Someone behind it knew his daughter.
He called police.
Vanessa tried to leave.
Daniel blocked the hallway.
“You stay.”
“Daniel, if you open that room, everything changes.”
He looked at her.
“Then it should’ve changed before you put your hands on my daughter.”
The three knocks came again.
Slower this time.
THUD.
THUD.
THUD.
And beneath them Daniel finally heard something else.
A voice.
So faint he almost thought Lily had imagined it.
“Carter…”
Daniel’s blood ran cold.
He recognized that voice.
Samuel Ward.
