Chapter 9 - Laura’s Voice

Daniel played it.
His mother had been dead for twenty-one years.
The first sound of her voice destroyed him.
“Daniel, if you're hearing this, then somebody finally stopped deciding for you.”
I closed my eyes.
Laura knew this family well.
She explained Alder House.
Charles.
The unauthorized testing.
Her affair.
Michael’s decision to raise Daniel as his son.
No excuses.
Then:
“Charles Voss is probably your biological father.”
Probably.
Why not certain?
Because the test Charles obtained was not the only paternity test.
Laura had ordered an independent one.
Result different.
Daniel stared at the recorder.
According to Laura, Charles’s Alder House test showed 99.98%.
Independent test excluded him.
Two contradictory results.
Which was correct?
Laura suspected Alder House switched samples.
Why?
Not to fabricate Charles as Daniel’s father specifically.
The laboratory had labeling problems.
Multiple infant samples.
That could mean Daniel wasn't Charles’s son.
Modern DNA could resolve it.
Daniel and Charles agreed to independent testing.
Result:
Charles Voss was not Daniel’s biological father.
Everything shifted.
The twenty-three-year-old paternity report was wrong.
The trust was based on false paternity.
Emily was not Daniel’s half-sister.
Margaret’s entire fear structure had been built around bad data.
Who was Daniel’s father?
Laura’s recording answered only partially.
She named another possibility:
Dr. Peter Lang.
A cardiologist at Alder House.
Laura had briefly separated from Michael and had a relationship with Peter during the same period.
Daniel sat motionless.
Then Laura said:
“Michael knew there was uncertainty. He chose to be your father anyway.”
Daniel cried.
Not quietly.
The identity question suddenly mattered less than the man who raised him.
Then the recording continued.
Laura believed the Alder House error was not random.
Baby 14’s sample may have been switched with Baby 17.
Who was Baby 17?
Records missing.
Margaret knew.
She had removed them.
Daniel confronted her.
“Who?”
Margaret refused.
“Not my secret.”
“It's literally my DNA.”
“Baby 17 is alive.”
“Who?”
“She has a family.”
“She deserves to know too.”
Margaret finally said:
“That's what Laura and I fought about before she died.”
Laura wanted disclosure.
Margaret wanted silence.
Then Margaret admitted something darker.
She did not merely remove Daniel’s file.
She switched the labels back after discovering the error.
But she never reported it.
Why?
Reporting would expose Alder House misconduct and her own role.
She corrected internal paper records quietly.
Then Charles later retrieved an older copy—the wrong result.
Thus Charles spent decades believing Daniel was his son.
Margaret knew that belief was false.
She let him believe it.
Daniel stared at her.
“You let him build trusts around a lie.”
“Yes.”
“You let me believe for six weeks that he was my father.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Margaret’s voice broke.
“Because if Charles learned his actual son was Baby 17, he would find him.”
Him.
Baby 17 was male.
Charles’s actual biological son.
Someone else.
Then Laura’s recording ended with one sentence:
“If Margaret still refuses to tell you who Baby 17 is, ask Henry why he changed his will.”
Henry.
Margaret’s late husband.
Daniel’s stepfather.
His will left almost everything to Margaret.
Or so Daniel believed.
We pulled the probate record.
There was a sealed codicil.
Beneficiary:
May you like
NOAH BENNETT.
Executed four years before Noah was born.
