Impossible.
Henry died five years ago.
Noah was twelve days old.
How could Henry name him?
He didn't.
The codicil said:
To the first biological child of Daniel Bennett.
Noah’s name had been added administratively after birth.
Value:
$4.1 million.
Another inheritance.
Daniel looked sick.
“I don't want any of this money.”
Money wasn't the question.
Why did Henry leave it to Daniel’s future child rather than Daniel?
The codicil included a letter.
Daniel,
There are truths Margaret believes she is protecting you from.
I disagree with her, but I love her.
I will not expose what she cannot yet face.
If you ever have a child, I want that child protected from the financial consequences of what happened at Alder House.
Daniel stopped reading.
Financial consequences?
Henry had discovered something.
He was not merely leaving money.

Henry had secretly owned Voss stock.

He received it from Margaret.
Margaret received it as part of a confidential Alder House settlement.

Andrew’s death?

But most shares were compensation for Baby 17.
Daniel looked at Margaret.
“Who is Baby 17?”
She closed her eyes.
Then:
“Henry.”
Silence.
That made no sense.
Henry had been an adult when Alder House operated.
Margaret corrected herself.
“Henry’s son.”
Daniel stared.
Henry Bennett had a biological son Daniel never knew.
Born in 1991.

Alder House nurse named Caroline Webb.
Henry had an affair before he married Margaret.
The baby was enrolled as Baby 17.
And Charles’s sample was accidentally attributed to him?
No.
Another twist.
Modern archived DNA showed Baby 17 actually was Charles’s biological child.
Which meant Caroline’s baby was not Henry’s.
Caroline had been involved with Charles too.
Henry raised no child because Caroline placed the baby for adoption.
Years later Henry learned the truth.
Charles did not.
Margaret did.
Again she kept it hidden.
But how did this connect to Daniel?
Baby 14 and Baby 17 samples were switched.
Thus Charles believed Daniel was his son when his actual son was the other baby.
Henry’s codicil sought to compensate Daniel’s descendants because Daniel had been unknowingly pulled into the concealment.
Still strange.
Then we located Baby 17’s adoption identity through lawful court channels.
Name:
Matthew Cole.
Thirty-five.
Alive.
Lives three states away.
We did not contact him immediately.
Independent intermediary first.
He had a right to decline.
He agreed to receive information.
Then something unexpected happened.
Matthew already knew Charles Voss.
Not as father.
As employer.
Matthew had worked for Voss Biomedical for eleven years.
Charles had hired his own biological son without knowing it.
Margaret had known for eight years.
I stared at her.
“How do you live carrying this many secrets?”
She answered:
“Badly.”
At least she knew.
Then Matthew agreed to meet Charles.
But before that happened, he asked to meet us.
Why?
Because Henry Bennett had contacted him four years earlier.
Henry told him something no one else had mentioned.
The Alder House sample switch wasn't an accident.
Someone deliberately changed Baby 14 and Baby 17.
