Chapter 1 - The Signature

I heard Noah before I saw him.
One sharp cry came from the downstairs bathroom, then another, and every nerve in my body reacted before my mind did.
I ran.
Margaret was bent over the toilet.
My newborn was there.
For half a second, the scene made no sense.
Then I saw Margaret’s hand near the lid.
“GET AWAY FROM MY BABY!”
I pulled her away and reached Noah first.
The moment he was against my chest, nothing else mattered. I checked his face, his breathing, his tiny hands. He was frightened and crying, but responsive.
Margaret moved toward us.
I backed away.
“Don't touch him.”
Her expression wasn't remorseful.
It was desperate.
“You have no idea what you're protecting.”
“What?”
She immediately stopped herself.
Then her phone slipped from her hand.
A folded piece of paper slid across the tile.
Margaret’s reaction was instant.
She reached for it.
I got there first.
“Rachel—”
“What is this?”
I unfolded it while keeping Noah securely against me.
His name appeared near the top.
NOAH BENNETT.
Below it:
$2,750,000.
And beneath that—
a signature.
Daniel Bennett.
My husband.
“What the hell is this?”
Margaret grabbed for the paper.
“Give it to me.”
“No.”
“Rachel, you don't understand.”
“Then explain it.”
Footsteps came down the hallway.
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
Relief hit me first.
Then I turned the paper toward him.
“Why is your signature on this?”
He went pale.
Not confused.
Not surprised.
Pale.
Margaret looked at him.
“Daniel…”
He didn't answer.
That was when Margaret pulled the document toward herself.
A second folded sheet slipped free.
It landed between us.
Daniel saw it.
His reaction was worse than Margaret’s.
“DON'T READ THAT—”
I looked down.
One line was visible.
PATERNITY ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
My stomach dropped.
I looked at Noah.
Then Daniel.
“What did you do?”
“Rachel, listen to me.”
“Is Noah yours?”
Daniel stared at me as though I'd asked an impossible question.
“Of course he's mine.”
“Then why are you terrified of that paper?”
Margaret answered for him.
“Because it isn't about whether Daniel is Noah’s father.”
I looked at her.
“Then whose paternity is it about?”
May you like
Margaret slowly turned toward Daniel.
“His.”
