Chapter 9 - The First Baby
Before Aaron.
Before Daniel.
There had been a girl.
Evelyn was nineteen.
The father was not Charles.
Not Edward.
She refused to name him.
The baby was born prematurely.
Evelyn was told the child died within hours.
No photograph.
No funeral.
It was 1988, and Evelyn's wealthy parents handled everything.
Years later, Margaret told her the baby had survived.
Placed for adoption.
Evelyn searched.
Charles discovered the search.
That was when their marriage began collapsing.
Aaron's later removal wasn't only about Edward's inheritance.
Charles feared Evelyn would uncover a broader adoption irregularity involving the same private clinic that had handled her first baby.
Why would Charles care?
His father, Henry Whitmore, sat on the clinic's board.
The Whitmores had used private placements for employees, relatives and wealthy clients.
Some legitimate.
Some poorly documented.
Possibly some involving coercive surrender practices that would require legal review.
Daniel felt the story expanding beyond money.
He hated it.
“Who was my sister?”
Evelyn didn't know.
Margaret claimed she found the adoption file once.
Name at birth:
Grace.
Adoptive family:
sealed.
Then the file vanished.
Caroline believed Charles took it.
Why?
Because Grace's biological father was powerful.
Daniel asked Evelyn again.
“Who?”
She whispered:
“Thomas Bell.”
A politician?
No.
Thomas Bell was a young attorney who later became a federal judge.
He had died twelve years earlier.
Married at the time of the relationship.
If Grace's parentage became public, it could have caused scandal.
But decades had passed.
Why would Charles continue hiding her?
Because Judge Bell later became involved in Whitmore Development litigation.
He repeatedly ruled in cases affecting the company.
If it became known that Charles had concealed Bell's biological daughter while Bell ruled on Whitmore matters, questions of influence and conflict could threaten old judgments and financial settlements.
That was serious.
But again, Daniel refused to assume corruption without evidence.
Then Leah remembered the white bottle.
The handwritten 714.
Everyone had treated it as Evelyn's hospital room.
What if it meant something else?
Caroline's letter contained a case number:
G-714.
Grace's adoption file.
714 wasn't merely a room.
It was a file designation.
The bottle had been deliberately marked to point toward Grace.
By whom?
Margaret denied writing it.
Vanessa denied it.
Handwriting analysis suggested neither.
Leah had never seen the bottle before Caleb found it.
Then Dr. Reeves called.
He recognized the bottle.
Not as medication packaging.
As a sample container from his clinic.
Three months earlier, someone had submitted a cheek-swab sample labeled G-714.
He assumed it was part of a research panel.
Who delivered it?
A woman using the name Grace Bell.
Daniel stopped breathing.
Grace might be alive.
Clinic security footage was retrieved.
A woman in her mid-thirties entered.
Dark brown hair.
Black coat.
Daniel didn't recognize her.
Leah did.
She whispered:
“That's Emily.”
Daniel turned sharply.
“Caleb's mother is dead.”
“Yes.”
“Then what are you saying?”
Leah stared at the footage.
The woman looked remarkably like Emily Carter.
But the date was three months ago.
Emily's death had been verified.
DNA.
Hospital witnesses.
Burial.
No reasonable doubt.
So this woman wasn't Emily.
A sister?
Emily had told Daniel she was an only child.
Her parents were dead.
Another incomplete family history.
Investigators identified the woman through vehicle records.
Name:
Grace Carter.
Age thirty-six.
Emily Carter's older adoptive sister.
Daniel had never heard of her.
Grace agreed to meet.
She walked into the room and looked at Daniel.
“You have Emily's eyes when you're angry.”
Daniel stared.
“Why didn't she tell me about you?”
“Because we hadn't spoken in twelve years.”
Grace had been adopted by the Carters as an infant.
When Emily was later born biologically to them, Grace felt increasingly like an outsider.
The sisters became estranged after their parents died.
Grace moved abroad.
She returned after learning Emily had died.
Then she discovered Emily left a letter.
It mentioned Caleb.
And Charles Whitmore.
Grace began investigating.
“Why use G-714?”
“My adoption file number.”
Evelyn began crying.
DNA testing was conducted.
Grace Carter was Evelyn's biological daughter.
Daniel had found his older half-sister.
But Grace's next sentence changed the room.
“I didn't come back to find my mother.”
Evelyn flinched.
“Then why?”
Grace looked at Daniel.
“Emily told me Charles arranged her relationship with you.”
Daniel stared.
“What?”
“Your father wanted Emily to have your child.”
“But Caleb isn't mine.”
