Chapter 6 - Adam

Finding Adam took forty-eight hours.

He wasn't hiding overseas.

He lived seventy miles away under the legal name Aaron Vale.

Fifty years old.

Restoration carpenter.

Divorced.

No criminal record.

No secret fortune.

No underground organization.

When police approached him, he cooperated.

Daniel did not meet him immediately.

He wanted DNA first.

The result confirmed:

Aaron Vale was Adam, Evelyn's missing son.

And Aaron was Caleb's biological father.

Daniel sat alone when he received the report.

His brother existed.

His son was his nephew.

Emily had known both brothers without initially understanding their relationship.

Aaron later told investigators he discovered Daniel's identity only after seeing a photograph in Emily's apartment.

He recognized Charles.

He panicked.

He ended the relationship without explaining why.

Then Charles contacted him.

Charles already knew about the pregnancy.

He offered Aaron money to disappear.

Aaron refused.

Charles threatened to expose irregularities in Aaron's childhood identity documents and claimed Emily would lose stability during pregnancy.

Aaron, raised his entire life to fear the Whitmore family, left.

Cowardly.

Understandable.

Still a choice.

Then Charles told him Emily miscarried.

Aaron believed him.

He had no idea Caleb existed.

Until six weeks earlier.

Margaret found him and showed him a photograph.

“Why didn't he contact us?” Daniel asked.

Nora answered:

“He was trying to establish the truth first.”

Aaron had secretly submitted a request through an attorney for records.

He had not approached Caleb.

The preschool photograph had been taken by Margaret, not Aaron.

He had visited the street once but remained across the road.

Daniel finally agreed to meet.

Aaron entered the room.

Daniel forgot how to breathe.

They didn't look identical.

Different fathers.

Different lives.

But Evelyn was visible in both faces.

Aaron spoke first.

“I'm sorry.”

“For what?”

“Emily.”

Daniel looked away.

“We were separated.”

“I know.”

“I didn't know you existed.”

“I know.”

“Did you love her?”

Aaron took time before answering.

“Yes.”

That hurt.

But honesty was better.

Daniel asked:

“Do you want Caleb?”

Aaron's eyes filled.

“I don't know what I'm allowed to want.”

That answer saved the conversation.

If Aaron had demanded fatherhood immediately, Daniel would have hated him.

Instead he said:

“You're his dad.”

Daniel's throat tightened.

“So are you.”

Neither knew what that meant yet.

They would need courts, therapists and time.

Then Aaron revealed something Margaret hadn't.

Six weeks earlier, when Margaret found him, she didn't merely tell him about Caleb.

She asked him to sign away any future paternity claim.

“Why?”

“She said it would protect Caleb's inheritance.”

“What inheritance?”

“The Edward Whitmore trust.”

But Aaron had no biological connection to Edward.

Caleb's qualification still made no sense.

Unless the trust had been altered.

Aaron had photographed Margaret's copy.

Daniel compared it with the document investigators recovered.

Different wording.

In Aaron's version:

First surviving male descendant of Charles Whitmore through either recognized son.

That could include Aaron's child.

In Vanessa's version:

Edward Whitmore through biological daughter.

Two contradictory trusts.

At least one forged.

Possibly both.

Who benefited from confusion?

Vanessa, if Caleb were falsely connected to her lineage.

Aaron, if Caleb were recognized through him.

Daniel, if he remained legal father.

Margaret sat at the center of every version.

Then Aaron said:

“There’s another document.”

“What?”

“A death certificate.”

“Whose?”

“Mine.”

Adam Whitmore had been legally declared dead in 1998.

Cause:

Drowning.

Signed witness:

Margaret Vale.

Margaret had helped Charles erase Adam legally.

Yet decades later she was supposedly trying to restore him.

Why?

Aaron believed guilt.

Daniel wasn't convinced.

Then Nora received a message.

Margaret wanted to surrender.

One condition.

She would speak only if Daniel and Aaron were both present.

Police controlled the meeting.

Margaret entered slowly.

She looked at the two sons of Evelyn Whitmore.

Then started crying.

“I'm sorry.”

Aaron remained cold.

“For which part?”

Margaret sat.

“For believing Charles.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“About what?”

She looked at Aaron.

“Your father.”

Aaron's biological father had never been unknown.

Margaret knew.

Evelyn knew once.

Charles knew.

The man was still alive.

“Who?” Aaron asked.

Margaret answered:

“Edward Whitmore.”

Daniel froze.

Charles's brother.

Vanessa's biological father.

If true, Aaron was Edward's son.

Vanessa was Edward's daughter.

Aaron and Vanessa were half-siblings.

And Caleb—

Aaron's biological son—

was indeed a male descendant of Edward.

The trust suddenly made sense.

But another truth became horrifying.

Vanessa had been mistreating her own biological nephew without knowing he was family.

Daniel stared at Margaret.

“Prove it.”

Margaret nodded.

“I can.”

“Then why hide it?”

“Because Edward was married.”

“That isn't enough.”

“No.”

“What else?”

Margaret looked at Aaron.

“Because Charles wasn't trying to get rid of you because you weren't his son.”

May you like

“Then why?”

“He was trying to get rid of Edward's heir.”
