Chapter 8 - Evelyn’s Choice
Evelyn denied it.
Then Margaret produced a letter.
Evelyn recognized the handwriting as her own.
But context changed everything.
The letter read:
Charles,
Take Adam somewhere safe.
Edward knows.
He says he is coming for him.
I cannot let him take my baby.
Make Adam disappear before Edward arrives.
Daniel looked at his mother over video.
“You asked Dad to hide Aaron.”
Evelyn cried.
“Temporarily.”
Margaret's accusation had been technically true and emotionally misleading.
Evelyn wanted Aaron hidden from Edward.
Not erased from her life forever.
Edward had discovered he was Aaron's father and demanded involvement.
Evelyn feared him.
Why?
Because Edward had become unstable after his motorcycle accident and was abusing alcohol and prescription medication.
Family records supported treatment for substance misuse and repeated volatile incidents.
No evidence established he intended to harm Aaron.
But Evelyn believed he might take the child.
She asked Charles to hide Aaron for several weeks.
Charles transformed temporary concealment into permanent removal.
Why?
Money.
Aaron's existence threatened control of Edward's estate.
Charles convinced Evelyn that Aaron died during the arrangement.
Margaret helped.
Not because she wanted Aaron gone.
Because Charles told her the child had been moved safely and Evelyn had changed her mind.
Everyone received a different lie.
Charles sat at the center.
But he was dead.
Daniel could hate him.
He couldn't question him.
Then Evelyn revealed why she never told Daniel about Aaron after discovering the death certificate was false.
Charles threatened to take Daniel too.
“He said he'd prove I was unstable.”
“You let me grow up without my brother.”
“I was afraid.”
“So was everyone.”
Daniel was beginning to despise fear as an explanation.
It explained almost everything.
Excused almost nothing.
Aaron listened silently.
Then asked:
“Did you ever look for me?”
Evelyn broke.
“Every year.”
She had hired investigators secretly.
Charles intercepted some.
Others found dead ends because Aaron's name changed.
Margaret had been the only person who knew enough to connect them.
She stayed silent.
Aaron looked at Margaret.
“Why?”
Margaret answered:
“Because by the time I realized Charles had lied, you were eight.”
“So?”
“You loved your family.”
Aaron stared.
“You decided that for me.”
“Yes.”
Again.
An adult deciding truth would hurt a child more than deception.
The pattern ran through everything.
Then Nora arrived with news.
Charles had not controlled Edward's shares personally after 1998.
A trustee had.
Name:
Caroline Vale.
The woman Vanessa believed was her mother.
Margaret's older daughter?
No.
Caroline was Margaret's younger sister.
She raised Vanessa as her own.
And she had administered Edward's hidden shares for twenty-six years.
Caroline supposedly died two years earlier.
This death was verified.
Cancer.
Medical records.
Funeral.
No resurrection.
But before dying, Caroline transferred trustee authority.
To whom?
Leah Morgan.
Daniel stared at Leah.
She looked equally stunned.
“I've never controlled a trust.”
Legally, perhaps she did.
Caroline had named Leah under a dormant successor clause.
Why?
Leah's mother Rachel Morgan had worked with Margaret.
Rachel was Caroline's daughter.
That made Leah Caroline's granddaughter.
Leah had never known.
Her mother told her Caroline was merely a family friend.
Another concealed lineage.
But the trust appointment was genuine.
Caroline had selected Leah as independent successor because she was related to the Vale family but not financially dependent on the Whitmores.
Leah now potentially controlled the voting mechanism governing Edward's disputed shares until beneficiaries were legally established.
Vanessa had accused Leah of searching for trust documents.
She was right about the search.
Wrong about Leah knowing she was trustee.
Then Daniel remembered the vase.
Vanessa hadn't attacked Leah merely because Leah protected Caleb.
She had seen Leah opening Charles's cabinet earlier.
Vanessa believed Leah was competing for the trust.
The violence was about panic, control and evidence.
Leah looked horrified.
“I came here looking for Adam. I didn't know about the money.”
Investigators found support for that in her old emails to her mother.
Then Caroline's final trustee letter was opened.
It began:
Leah,
If you are reading this, Margaret has failed.
Margaret closed her eyes.
Caroline's letter accused her sister of becoming obsessed with restoring Edward's bloodline at any cost.
She believed Margaret would eventually manipulate Vanessa or Aaron.
Caroline therefore created a safeguard.
No beneficiary could receive control until both Aaron and Vanessa were independently informed of their relationship and Caleb's interests were protected.
Margaret had tried to circumvent it.
Then the letter contained one more warning:
Do not let Margaret tell Daniel that Charles alone created this.
Daniel frowned.
Created what?
The next page:
The Whitmore inheritance was never the reason Adam was removed.
It was the cover story we built later.
Aaron stood.
“What was the real reason?”
Caroline's letter answered:
Ask Evelyn what happened to the baby born before Adam.
Evelyn went completely white.
Daniel stared at his mother.
“There was another baby?”
She began shaking.
“No.”
Aaron whispered:
“Mom.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
