Ethan had assumed his mother took the photograph because she wrote on back.
Wrong.
Original print came from an old instant camera used by mansion staff for inventory documentation.
Who pressed shutter?
Anna discovered answer in cabinet envelope.

SHE DOES NOT KNOW WHAT IT SHOWS.
Rosa had been senior housekeeper six years ago.
Anna knew her.

“But it changed whether anyone could question capacity.”

No excuse.
That was major payoff.
Still one more question.
Why did Evelyn preserve instead of disclose after discovering timestamp alteration?
She confronted Claire three months later.
Claire confessed.
Evelyn consulted outside counsel.
Counsel warned voiding Stonebridge transaction might create years of litigation and threaten tenant improvements already underway.
Evelyn chose:
correct conflicts,
recover fees,
document truth,
wait out indemnity,
then release.
A governance compromise.

Not pure cover-up for reputation.
She prioritized residents.
Then Ethan found one thing Evelyn did not know.
Stonebridge executives had been informed Ethan was impaired.
Email from David to Stonebridge at 12:09:
E.B. has delegated. Do not contact directly tonight.
Stonebridge replied:
Understood.
That was suspicious.
But not proof they knew incapacity.
Then another email at 12:37:
Medical situation. Proceed on Claire authority.
Stonebridge proceeded.
Transaction closing documents signed next day while Ethan hospitalized.
Question:
Did Claire’s temporary proxy legally survive hospitalization and revocation attempt?
Lawyers disagreed.
This could affect historical validity.
But six years later buildings had changed hands, been renovated, tenants had rights.
Undoing could cause more harm than cure.
Ethan faced hard choice:
seek transaction rescission,
or pursue accountability without destabilizing residents.
