Chapter 6 - Anna Wasn’t Looking for Trouble
Anna had worked at Bennett mansion for four years.
She was not secret investigator.
Not undercover heir.
Not Evelyn’s hidden relative.
She was a maid.
Good at job.
Observant.
Trusted with antique furniture because she was careful.
That mattered.
The story did not need to turn every witness into a spy.
Anna found photograph because cabinet backing shifted while she dusted.
She remembered Evelyn’s odd instruction.
She removed envelope.
Claire entered.
Saw it.
Froze.
“Give me that.”
Anna said she should call Ethan.
Claire grabbed photograph.
Anna held on.
The tug began.
Then club.
No premeditated attack.
A panic escalation.
Still serious.
Claire then shattered glass because old lie gave her template.
If Anna appeared injured among broken panels, Claire could say fall.
Exactly what she had told Ethan six years earlier.
That parallel was damning.
Then Ethan discovered an important difference.
Six years earlier Claire had not struck him.
Audio and medical evidence suggested Ethan’s injury occurred later.
At 12:23 a.m., after proxy vote, Ethan became agitated when Claire told him Stonebridge passed.
He tried to leave.
He was dizzy.
Claire blocked him.
They argued.
Ethan pushed past.
His foot slipped on a loose runner.
He struck side of head against console edge.
Glass vase fell and broke.
Claire did not cause fall intentionally.
But then she made terrible choice.
Instead of calling immediately, she and David spent eighteen minutes collecting documents and agreeing what to tell paramedics.
Why delay?
They feared Ethan, if conscious, would tell responders he had been pressured to sign.
David insisted story remain simple until counsel arrived.
Claire complied.
At 12:41 she called ambulance.
That delay could have mattered medically, though doctors later found no evidence it worsened outcome.
Still reckless.
Why did Claire later say she found him alone?
To conceal:
impaired signing,
conflicted vote,
David’s involvement,
delay.
Thus Evelyn’s message:
CLAIRE LIED ABOUT THAT NIGHT.
Not murder.
Not planned assault.
A cover-up of compromised governance and delayed emergency call.
Then Anna recovered a second detail.
During current attack, before Claire swung club, she said:
“You don’t know what Ethan will do if he finds out.”
Not:
“I’ll lose everything.”
Her fear included Ethan.
Why?
Claire believed Ethan would blame her for something worse than Stonebridge.
The eighteen-minute delay?
Maybe.
But Ethan had survived.
What else happened during delay?
Audio cache ended at 12:24.
Smart-home system went offline.
Claire claimed accidental breaker trip.
Maintenance records showed manual shutoff from basement.
Who shut system off?
David was upstairs with Ethan.
Claire was hallway.
A third person was in mansion.
The photo Ethan held showed only Claire and himself.
Anna’s whisper “she wasn’t alone” had been correct in more than one sense.
And according to old visitor log, the third person entered at 11:57 p.m.
