Chapter 7 - Michael Reed Came Back That Night
Michael Reed was alive.
No fake death.
He lived quietly in Oregon and worked for a regional construction cooperative.
Ethan had not spoken to him in six years.
When Ethan called, Michael answered:
“I wondered when Evelyn’s clock would run out.”
He knew.
That alone changed everything.
Michael had been Bennett Heritage Reserve’s CFO.
He opposed Stonebridge—not because deal was bad, but because financial model Claire and David relied on was incomplete.
Insurance denial was real.
Emergency repairs were real.

Then fell.
After Ethan struck head, Michael wanted ambulance immediately.
David stopped him.
“What are you doing?” Michael shouted.
David said:
“If paramedics hear him accusing us while delirious, the transaction implodes.”
Michael threatened call himself.
Claire blocked.
Not physically violent.
She begged for “five minutes.”
Those five became eighteen.
Michael finally used own phone.
Why dispatch record showed Claire’s number?
Because before call connected, Claire took over and called herself, fearing two conflicting calls.
Michael left furious after ambulance.
Next morning he resigned.
Why never tell Ethan?
He tried.
Ethan was still hospitalized.
Evelyn intercepted.
She asked Michael for all documents and begged him wait until independent review protected tenants.
Michael agreed for thirty days.
Then Evelyn asked for longer.
He refused and sent letter.
Ethan never received.
Why?
Evelyn held it.
Another painful reveal.
Claire wasn’t only person who controlled truth.
Ethan’s mother did too.
Michael said:
“Evelyn thought she was protecting you and residents. I thought she was making same mistake in nicer clothes.”
Harsh.
Probably fair.
Then Michael delivered final blow.
“Claire did something else after ambulance.”
“What?”
“She went back to study and changed timestamp on proxy scan.”
Ethan froze.

Before Ethan took medication effect worsened.
That made competency look stronger.
Who changed?
Michael saw Claire at scanner.
Claire denied altering content but admitted changing scan filename.
Forensic archives would decide.
If actual document timestamp changed, that was falsification.
If only file label changed, still misleading.
Ethan now understood why Claire feared photograph.
It anchored her physically beside him at 11:36.
