Evelyn was Richard’s older sister.
Seventy-two.
Former accountant.
Alive.
Cognitively sharp.
Physically disabled after stroke several years earlier.
Why did family never mention her?
Richard had told Margaret his sister cut contact before marriage.
Margaret believed she lived abroad.
Sarah knew name but thought she died.
Emily had never heard it.
Daniel traveled with consent and attorney.
Evelyn agreed speak.
When shown Emily photograph, she cried.
“She looks like Ruth.”
“Who is Ruth?”
“My mother.”
Nothing sinister.
Family resemblance.
Then Evelyn said:
“Does Emily know about Whitmore trust?”
“Yes.”
“Does she know why Charles picked her?”
“Partly.”
“No.”
Evelyn shook head.
“Charles didn't pick Emily because she was least loyal to Richard.”
Daniel waited.
“He picked her because I asked him to.”
Why would Richard’s sister influence Margaret’s father?
Evelyn had worked as external accountant for Whitmore businesses.
She discovered Richard misusing vendor accounts before Margaret married him.
She warned Charles.
Charles disliked Richard partly because of her evidence.
After Emily was born, Evelyn urged Charles create independent protection for eldest grandchild.
Why Emily specifically?
Because Richard had already borrowed money in infant Emily’s name.
Not legally from baby directly—he had opened custodial investment account funded by gifts and pledged/used assets improperly through family-controlled arrangements. Lawyers later unwound.
Charles was furious.
He created trust.
Emily became first protected beneficiary.
Claire and Olivia later added smaller interests automatically under descendant provisions.
Thus Emily’s birth didn't ruin family.
It interrupted Richard’s access to money.
Richard blamed her from infancy because her existence brought Charles’s scrutiny and trust controls.
But Evelyn revealed more.
Richard paid her monthly not out of kindness.
Settlement.
In 1999, before Emily’s birth, Evelyn confronted him over forged vendor approvals.
Richard threatened career.
She sued privately.
They settled.
Monthly payments continued.
No secret inheritance.
No paternity.
No swapped child.
Just decades of financial misconduct and family concealment.
Then Evelyn asked:
“Has anyone found Richard’s red ledger?”
Emily had blue ledger.
“Red?”
Evelyn explained Richard kept two.
Blue tracked money he wanted family to think existed.
Red tracked actual liabilities.
If red ledger survived explosion, it could expose what Richard was currently hiding.
Where?
Evelyn suspected villa basement.
Blast targeted basement archive.
So Richard likely destroyed it.
Unless Sarah copied.
She hadn't.
Then Claire remembered something.
Two days before explosion, Richard gave her locked red leather book.
“Put this somewhere Emily will never look.”
Where?
Claire was ashamed.
“Her room.”
Perfect hiding place because Richard assumed police would blame Emily if found.
Claire hid ledger inside base of reinforced bed.
Police recovered.
Red ledger contained financial transfers.
But not embezzlement alone.
Repeated payments over eighteen months to:
HARBOR DEMOLITION SERVICES.
A legitimate contractor.
Why would Richard hire demolition company while living in villa?
Invoices described “structural remediation planning.”
Company owner told investigators Richard asked about controlled removal of damaged basement wing because he planned renovation.
Nothing necessarily criminal.
But one invoice dated day before explosion.
Emergency overnight site consultation.
Technician denied performing explosive work at villa.
He had inspected cracked foundation and recommended evacuation during future demolition.
Richard signed acknowledgment.
Meaning Richard knew basement structure was unsafe.
Then blast could have interacted with preexisting work? Yet investigators already said deliberate. Need keep.
Company had subcontractor:
Mason Pike.
Mason disappeared same night as Richard.
Phone records connected them.
Daniel finally had possible accomplice.
Then Emily received voicemail from unknown number.
Richard’s voice.
“Emily, listen to me. Claire poisoned you, but I did not cause explosion.”
Pause.
Then:
“Sarah knows who did.”
