Chapter 1 - The Night They Finally Became Afraid of Her

For most of her life, Emily Carter had learned that pain was funniest when it belonged to her.

At twenty-eight, she weighed nearly two hundred kilograms. Every movement required effort, and inside the Carter villa, that effort was treated as entertainment.

Her younger sister Claire called her “the family embarrassment.”

Her mother, Margaret, preferred silence—a thin smile whenever someone insulted Emily, as though cruelty beneath acknowledgment was more elegant than cruelty spoken aloud.

Her father, Richard Carter, was worse.

Richard never merely mocked.

He looked at Emily as if her existence had personally cost him something.

That night, Emily waited until the family had gone upstairs before opening the food she had ordered.

Fried chicken.

Pizza.

Pastries.

Cola.

Food had become the one part of her life nobody could reject her from.

She took several bites.

Then stopped.

Something tasted wrong.

Minutes later, violent nausea folded her over.

The chicken slipped from her hand.

Her stomach cramped so severely that she couldn't stand.

“Mom...”

No answer.

Emily tried pulling herself upright against the sofa.

Her legs buckled.

So she crawled.

By the time she reached the staircase, sweat covered her face.

“Mom... please help me.”

Margaret emerged above her in an expensive robe.

Disgust crossed her face.

Emily grabbed her ankle.

“Please.”

Margaret jerked free and kicked Emily away.

Emily lost balance near the stairs and crashed down several carpeted steps before striking the landing.

Claire appeared.

She was holding Emily’s cola.

And smiling.

“You pig,” Margaret snapped. “You ruined this family’s sleep.”

Emily vomited.

Claire descended several steps, pinching her nose theatrically.

Then she poured the remaining foul liquid across the discarded food.

“This stinking mess suits you.”

Emily stared at bottle.

Something changed behind her eyes.

She knew.

Not exactly what Claire had put into her food.

But enough.

Her sister had done this deliberately.

Emily reached behind loose stair molding.

Claire stopped smiling.

Emily pulled out tiny camera.

Weeks earlier, after food repeatedly disappeared or tasted strange, Emily had hidden it there.

She pressed playback.

On screen:

Claire entered dining area earlier that evening.

She opened Emily’s food.

She poured something into it.

Richard came downstairs.

He watched footage.

Then laughed.

“No one would care if a pig like you died.”

Margaret laughed too.

Claire joined her.

Something inside Emily went quiet.

Not rage.

Not yet.

Acceptance.

She reached behind her back and removed an object Richard instantly recognized.

A grenade.

For first time in Emily’s memory, her father looked afraid of her.

Margaret screamed.

Claire stumbled backward.

Emily’s tears kept falling even as a bitter smile appeared.

“None of you deserve to live.”

She pulled the pin.

And threw it.

The family scattered.

A deafening explosion tore through the villa.

Glass burst inward.

Smoke swallowed staircase.

Emily disappeared beneath darkness.

And then—

nothing.

At 12:17 a.m., the Carter villa’s security system automatically contacted emergency services.

At 12:26, firefighters entered.

At 12:31, they found the first survivor.

It wasn't Emily.

May you like

And the first words that survivor whispered changed the entire investigation.

“The grenade didn't do this.”
