Chapter 12 - Two People Touched the Food

Margaret denied adding medication.

Her prescription bottle was missing.

Who had access?

Entire household.

Claire.

Richard.

Emily.

Housekeeper.

Margaret.

Security footage from Emily’s mini-camera showed Claire contaminating food.

But angle did not cover earlier two hours.

Professional hidden camera Sarah installed did.

At 9:18 p.m., Richard entered.

He opened cola.

Dropped something inside.

Closed bottle.

Left.

So Claire was not only person who tampered with food.

Richard had drugged Emily first.

Why?

To make her drowsy enough to sign paperwork?

Richard finally admitted.

“Yes.”

Margaret’s medication.

He intended small amount? No need dosage. He claimed enough to make Emily sleepy, not harm. Dangerous and illegal regardless.

Then Claire later added filthy contaminant, unaware drink already adulterated.

Combined effects made Emily severely ill.

Thus no single mastermind ordered entire attack.

That made family more horrifying.

Each person independently chose to violate Emily.

Richard drugged her to manipulate signature.

Claire contaminated food for humiliation and resentment.

Margaret kicked her when she begged for help.

Richard laughed instead of aiding her.

Claire mocked.

And explosion was separate financial cover-up.

Their cruelty converged.

Emily’s grenade stunt emerged from culmination.

But where had inert grenade come from?

Richard display case.

Forensics confirmed serial markings matched insured deactivated collector object.

It could not have caused primary explosion.

Emily had believed that.

Yet throwing it while screaming threat remained dangerous and criminally serious.

Emily did not deny.

“I wanted them terrified.”

“Did you want them dead?”

She took long time.

“In that second, I thought I did.”

“Did you believe object would kill them?”

“No.”

“Why say none deserve live?”

“Because I wanted them to hear something as ugly as everything they said to me.”

Emily did not frame herself hero.

“I did something terrible.”

That distinction mattered.

She had not caused explosion—but she had threatened family with object they reasonably believed lethal.

Her trauma explained state.

It did not erase responsibility.

Then Daniel asked Richard:

“Why trigger explosion at that exact moment?”

Richard requested private counsel consultation.

Afterward he admitted enough.

He had arranged destructive event to erase basement records.

He expected Margaret and Claire to leave villa after midnight.

He expected Emily upstairs asleep/sedated.

But Margaret sent Claire to bring Emily downstairs for signature.

Claire contaminated food.

Emily crawled into foyer.

Everything changed.

Richard could have aborted plan.

Instead, when Emily threw grenade-shaped object, he saw perfect cover.

He activated destruction.

He believed blast would be confined largely basement/eastern wing.

He was wrong.

He risked everyone.

“Why follow Emily afterward?”

“She had blue ledger.”

“How did you know?”

“I saw it missing.”

“What would you do if you caught her?”

Richard said:

“Take it back.”

Daniel didn't believe that was whole answer.

But no evidence supported more severe intention.

Then Emily remembered woman’s voice saving her.

Sarah.

That part resolved.

Survivors?

Emily alive.

Margaret alive.

Claire alive.

Sarah alive.

Richard alive and arrested.

Olivia wasn't present.

Nobody died.

The “massacre” everyone assumed from footage had not happened.

But one question remained.

Why had Richard’s red ledger contained twenty-eight years of payments beginning day Emily was born to Evelyn?

Settlement explained payments.

Yet first payment predates Evelyn’s alleged dispute by months according dates.

Evelyn had lied.

When confronted, she closed eyes.

“Because I promised Charles I would never tell Emily.”

“Tell her what?”

Evelyn whispered:

“Why he created trust before he ever saw Richard’s fraud.”

That contradicted everything.

May you like

Charles had another reason for protecting Emily.

And it began the day she was born.
