Chapter 8 - Why Evelyn Chose Tessa
Hadrian's first reaction was anger.
Why would Evelyn name a twenty-something woman he'd barely known as Sorrel's guardian?
Then Tessa explained.
She and Evelyn had been closer than Hadrian realized.
Not romantically.
Not secretly related.
Something simpler.
Evelyn mentored her.
Tessa was Clara's daughter.
Evelyn felt responsible for helping the young woman build a stable life.
Over time, they became friends.
When Sorrel was born, Tessa frequently helped during Hadrian's business travel.
Hadrian remembered.
He had thought she was merely one of Evelyn's assistants.
Again, he had been present without paying enough attention.
Evelyn chose Tessa because she trusted one thing:
Tessa would leave the Mercer money untouched.
The trust provided independent professional trustees.
Tessa's role was personal care, not financial control.
Aurelia hated that structure.
She could marry Hadrian and still gain almost nothing.
Then why stay?
Hadrian asked her during a supervised interview.
Aurelia looked exhausted.
“Because eventually I stopped caring about the money.”
Hadrian stared.
She continued:
“I loved you.”
“You chained my daughter to a chair.”
Aurelia closed her eyes.
“I know.”
“Then don't use love as your defense.”
“I'm not.”
Good.
Aurelia admitted she initially approached Hadrian because of the trust.
Clara's disappearance left her desperate for money.
She discovered Evelyn's Mercer identity.
Then learned about Sorrel.
She engineered a meeting with Hadrian.
But months later, she wanted the relationship for itself.
Unfortunately, wanting Hadrian meant resenting Sorrel more.
Sorrel was Evelyn's child.
Sorrel controlled the trust.
Sorrel reminded Hadrian of his dead wife.
Sorrel also preferred Tessa.
Aurelia's resentment became cruelty.
It started small.
Withholding dessert.
Forcing Sorrel to sit alone.
Making her perform unnecessary chores.
Threatening to send Tessa away.
Hadrian hadn't seen it.
Then the restraint.
Aurelia insisted the chain had only been used twice.
Hadrian's face hardened.
“Only?”
Aurelia looked down.
She understood.
Then he asked:
“Who first put it on her?”
Aurelia hesitated.
That was the mystery from the smartwatch recording.
Finally:
“Your mother.”
Hadrian froze.
Margaret?

Aurelia nodded.
“Ask her what happened three months ago.”
