Chapter 2 - Evelyn’s Box

Hadrian did not question Sorrel aggressively.

That mattered.

A frightened five-year-old was not an interrogation subject.

Police were called.

A child-welfare specialist came.

Sorrel stayed with Hadrian.

Aurelia was removed from the house pending investigation.

The chain, cuff, smartwatch, and security footage were preserved.

Hadrian barely slept.

The next morning, Sorrel asked for pancakes.

Hadrian made terrible pancakes.

She ate them anyway.

Only afterward did he gently ask what she meant by “Mommy had two.”

Sorrel led him upstairs.

Not to her bedroom.

To Evelyn's old dressing room.

Hadrian had kept it locked since his wife's death three years earlier.

Sorrel pointed toward the closet.

“Miss Aurelia goes in there.”

Hadrian's chest tightened.

Aurelia had told him she respected Evelyn's things too much to enter.

Another lie.

He unlocked the door.

Most of Evelyn's belongings remained untouched.

Sorrel walked directly to a wooden storage chest.

“Here.”

The chest was locked.

Hadrian found the key missing.

A locksmith opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Legal papers.

A small cassette recorder.

And one empty velvet compartment shaped exactly like the ankle shackle downstairs.

Beside it was another compartment.

Also empty.

Two cuffs.

Sorrel had been right.

Hadrian found a photograph beneath the velvet.

Evelyn at approximately seventeen.

She stood outside an unfamiliar brick building.

Beside her was another teenage girl.

Their ankles were connected by short padded restraints.

Not punishment.

At least the photograph didn't look that way.

Both girls wore climbing helmets.

A wilderness rehabilitation program.

Hadrian turned the picture over.

Evelyn's handwriting:

AUGUST 2002 — THE DAY CLARA AND I RAN.

Clara.

Hadrian didn't know any Clara.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Mara Ellis.

They had examined Sorrel's smartwatch.

The recording was genuine.

Made two nights earlier.

But Aurelia's statement continued beyond what Sorrel played.

Hadrian listened.

Aurelia:

“Hadrian must never know who was the first person to put that chain on her ankle.”

Another voice answered:

“He'll find out eventually.”

Hadrian recognized it.

His mother.

Margaret Vale.

Aurelia replied:

“Then tell him what Evelyn did to Clara.”

Hadrian stared at the photograph.

His mother had known.

He called her.

Margaret answered on the first ring.

“Hadrian—”

“Who is Clara?”

Silence.

May you like

Then his mother whispered:

“Aurelia's sister.”
