Chapter 7 - Clara Comes Home

Clara Cross was alive.
Fifty-two.
Thin.
Gray beginning at her temples.
She stood in Hadrian's living room holding a cardboard archive box.
Aurelia had not seen her sister in fourteen years.
Why?
Because Clara chose to disappear.
Not from everyone.
From Aurelia.
Hadrian didn't understand.
Then Clara explained.
After their mother's death, Aurelia became financially dependent on Clara.
At first it was normal.
College.
Rent.
Emergencies.
Then Aurelia began forging Clara's signature.
Credit cards.
Loans.
Eventually a mortgage application.
Clara confronted her.
Aurelia threatened self-harm if abandoned.
Clara stayed.
The cycle continued.
Finally Clara left.
Changed addresses.
Communicated only through an attorney.
Aurelia told everyone her sister had died because admitting abandonment felt worse.
Hadrian listened carefully.
Again, explanation.
Not justification.
Then Clara saw Sorrel.
Her expression broke.
“I am so sorry.”
Hadrian kept distance between them.
“You didn't put the cuff on her.”
“No.”
“But your story was used to get into my family.”
“Yes.”
Clara opened the archive box.
Inside were copies of Northwood files.
She and Evelyn had stolen them back from whoever obtained them after closure.
Not to blackmail anyone.
To identify victims and destroy leverage.
But one folder could not be recovered.
Mercer Family — Private.
It contained records about Conrad.
Evelyn.
And a secret trust.
Conrad established it after Northwood closed.
Beneficiary:
Evelyn Mercer.
Secondary beneficiary:
Evelyn's first biological child.
Hadrian stared.
Sorrel was Evelyn's first and only child.
The trust was worth approximately $42 million.
Hadrian had never heard of it.
Did Aurelia know?
Yes.
That was the real reason she targeted Hadrian.
Not Clara's history.
Not revenge.
Money.
Aurelia learned about the trust while searching Clara's old documents.
She discovered Sorrel would gain control through trustees at age twenty-five.
If Sorrel died before adulthood?
The trust reverted to Conrad Mercer's charitable foundation.
So Aurelia couldn't inherit it.
Hadrian relaxed slightly.
Then Clara continued.
“But if Sorrel is declared permanently incapacitated…”
Hadrian's blood chilled.
A guardian could exercise certain beneficiary rights.
Who would become guardian if Hadrian died or became unable to serve?
Hadrian's estate plan named his future spouse as secondary guardian.
Aurelia.
Everything aligned.
Aurelia had been trying to marry Hadrian.
Gain legal standing.
Control Sorrel.
But there was no evidence she planned to kill anyone.
Hadrian refused to leap beyond facts.
Still, the pattern was enough.
Then Clara removed one final document.
An amendment to the trust.
Signed three months before Evelyn died.
It removed the future-spouse clause.
Named someone else as Sorrel's backup guardian.
Hadrian looked at the name.
Tessa Monroe.
Tessa stared.
“I didn't know.”
Clara believed her.
Hadrian did too.
Then Hadrian noticed the witness signature.
Aurelia Cross.
May you like
His fiancée had witnessed the document that prevented her from ever controlling Sorrel's trust.
So she had known about Tessa from the beginning.
