Chapter 6 - The Vault Beneath Aurum House

We didn't storm into any underground vault.

Real life rarely cooperates that cleanly.

Dad contacted his attorney and the private security liaison he still knew through Aurum House.

The number corresponded to an archival safe-deposit compartment established twenty-two years earlier.

Registered owner:

Laura Hayes.

Access condition:

Emily Hayes upon thirty-fifth birthday.

There it was again.

Me.

Dad looked devastated.

“She planned this.”

“Planned what?”

“I don't know.”

The box had remained untouched for twenty-one years.

Until last week.

Someone attempted access.

That explained Dad’s warning.

He had received an automated legacy notification because he remained listed as an emergency contact.

“Who tried?”

The club wouldn't say without formal authorization.

But Dad knew Daniel would make another attempt after the divorce.

That was why he forced me to change everything.

The PINs weren’t just protecting money.

One of my old financial PINs had been used years ago as part of a legacy identity-verification sequence.

Daniel had lived with me long enough to know my habits.

Birthdays.

Anniversaries.

Repeated numbers.

Dad assumed he would try.

And he did.

The $998,214 dinner was camouflage.

Buried inside the massive transaction request was a legacy authorization ping to compartment 998214.

The waiter’s sentence—this card was flagged—meant the system caught it.

Daniel had tried to turn a humiliating dinner into an authentication event.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You used my birthday?”

Daniel remained silent.

She began laughing.

Not happily.

“You never loved anybody.”

Then the archival box was brought upstairs under controlled procedure.

I was the only authorized person permitted to open it.

Inside were no diamonds.

No cash.

One photograph.

One cassette-sized encrypted storage device.

And a letter.

Emily,

If Richard is standing beside you, tell him I'm sorry.

Dad stopped breathing.

I continued.

If Daniel Carter is anywhere near you, do not let him see the photograph.

My hands began shaking.

Daniel lunged toward the table.

Dad intercepted him.

I turned the photograph over before Daniel could see it.

Two women stood together.

My mother.

And another woman who looked almost exactly like her.

On the back:

Laura Hayes and Rebecca Cole.

Cole.

Vanessa’s surname.

I slowly looked at her.

Vanessa stared at the photograph.

“No.”

“What?”

She began shaking her head.

“No, no, no.”

“Vanessa?”

May you like

She pointed at the second woman.

“That’s my mother.”
