Chapter 4 - Why Daniel Married Me

Daniel tried to leave.

Dad blocked the doorway.

Not physically.

He simply stood there.

Daniel stopped anyway.

That was when I understood my father frightened him.

Not because Richard was violent.

Because Richard recognized systems.

And Daniel had built one.

Vanessa sank into a chair.

“I met Daniel before he met you.”

My head snapped toward her.

“What?”

“Not romantically.”

She had been twenty-one.

Daniel twenty-eight.

Both had worked briefly for Halcyon Heritage Partners, a private wealth-management company.

I knew the name.

My mother had consulted for Halcyon before her death.

Dad closed his eyes.

“Of course.”

Daniel snapped:

“Vanessa, don't.”

She continued.

Halcyon maintained dormant accounts, inheritance vehicles and private family trusts.

One account had become infamous internally.

The Hayes Family Continuity Trust.

My trust.

I didn't know it existed.

Dad had created it after Mom disappeared.

The trust contained money, but that wasn’t what interested Daniel.

It contained restricted access to sealed financial records Laura had left behind.

Release conditions were peculiar.

Richard could access them.

Or Emily could access them after age thirty-five under specific circumstances.

I had turned thirty-five four months ago.

My divorce began three months ago.

My stomach turned.

“Daniel married me for access?”

Vanessa nodded.

“Originally.”

Originally.

The word hurt more than it should have.

Daniel finally exploded.

“I loved you!”

I stared at him.

“Did you know who I was when we met?”

Silence.

“Daniel?”

“Yes.”

Twelve years vanished beneath one syllable.

The coffee shop.

Our first date.

His fascination with my father’s career.

His endless questions about Mom.

The way he encouraged me to use my married surname professionally.

None of it had been random.

But Vanessa added another complication.

“Daniel couldn't open the trust by staying married.”

Dad looked at her sharply.

“What?”

“The trigger changed.”

Someone altered the access conditions years ago.

The sealed records could now become accessible when Emily reached thirty-five and experienced a legally recognized change of marital status.

Divorce.

Daniel hadn't merely abandoned me.

He needed the divorce.

“Then why take half my assets?”

Daniel laughed.

“Because after twelve years, I thought I'd earned something.”

That sentence killed whatever remained of my marriage.

But Dad was focused elsewhere.

“Who altered the trust?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Daniel answered:

“Laura.”

My mother.

Dad stared at him.

“Laura was dead.”

May you like

Daniel smiled for the first time.

“That depends which Laura you're talking about.”
