Chapter 12 - Noon

At 11:58 the next morning, I stood beside the window.
Dad watched the driveway.
Vanessa sat silently at the kitchen table.
Daniel was gone from our lives, at least personally. His legal problems were beginning elsewhere.
11:59.
No car.
12:00.
Nothing.
12:03.
Dad stopped pretending.
“We follow Laura’s instructions.”
The next envelope contained a storage location.
Inside were documents connecting Eleanor to decades of Halcyon transactions.
Enough to trigger serious investigations.
But no Laura.
At 12:17, a landline in the house rang.
Dad froze.
I answered.
“Hello?”
Silence.
Then breathing.
“Mom?”
A woman's voice.
Older.
Familiar in a way that reached beneath memory.
“Emily.”
My knees nearly failed.
“Mom?”
Dad grabbed the counter.
Laura started crying.
So did I.
“Where are you?”
“I can't tell you yet.”
“Are you safe?”
Pause.
“For the moment.”
“Come home.”
“I’m trying.”
Twenty-one years collapsed into those words.
Then she said something unexpected.
“Is Vanessa there?”
I handed over the receiver.
Vanessa could barely speak.
“Laura?”
“Your mother saved me.”
Vanessa cried.
“I know.”
“I’m sorry.”
“It wasn't your fault.”
Then Laura said:
“Rebecca left you something Eleanor can never know about.”
“What?”
“Ask Richard about the Sapphire Account.”
Dad's face drained.
Vanessa slowly turned toward him.
“What is the Sapphire Account?”
My father didn't answer.
Mom heard the silence.
“Richard still hasn't told you.”
“Told me what?”
Dad closed his eyes.
Laura said:
“Richard wasn't only investigating Halcyon.”
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“He helped build its first fraud-detection system.”
Dad finally spoke.
“And I left when I learned how they were abusing it.”
Mom replied:
“But not before Eleanor copied your architecture.”
Vanessa whispered:
“So Richard created the system used for the Mirror Protocol?”
“No,” Dad said.
“I created the system they corrupted into it.”
A distinction.
But a devastating one.
Mom continued:
“And that is why Eleanor has never primarily been hunting me.”
I tightened my grip on the receiver.
“Who is she hunting?”
May you like
Mom answered:
“Your father.”
