Chapter 5 - Evelyn’s Last Recording

We needed a cassette player.

Wyatt had one.

That surprised everyone except me.

My son collected old audio equipment because Evelyn had loved it.

Sabrina had thrown most of his collection into basement storage.

I found the player inside a plastic container ten feet from where they had chained him.

There was something fitting about that.

I inserted the tape.

Evelyn’s voice filled the basement.

“Abraham, if you're hearing this, Samuel is alive.”

My brother closed his eyes.

My chest tightened.

Evelyn continued.

“Do not blame him for disappearing.”

She had found Samuel in a Wyoming clinic.

Burned.

Terrified.

He told her someone at Heartland had forged Abraham’s approval code.

Evelyn investigated quietly.

She found payments.

False manifests.

Modified freight routes.

Then one name.

Peter Larkin.

Everyone turned.

Peter ran.

One of Samuel’s men caught him before he reached the stairs.

Evelyn’s recording continued.

“Peter isn't working alone.”

Peter stopped struggling.

“He reports to someone with access to our family trust.”

Margaret’s expression remained calm.

Too calm.

Then Evelyn said:

“I don't know who.”

Margaret smiled faintly.

Good performance.

But I saw Samuel watching her.

He was beginning to doubt everything she had told him.

Evelyn had hidden Samuel because she believed bringing him home would expose him.

She planned to gather evidence first.

Then something happened.

She became ill.

Cancer.

Fast.

By the time she realized she was dying, Samuel had disappeared again.

“I tried contacting him,” Evelyn said.

“But someone intercepted every message.”

Peter stared at the floor.

I wanted to break him.

Instead, I listened.

The final portion concerned Wyatt.

“If they ever come back, they'll come through our son.”

Not my son.

Our son.

“Because Wyatt possesses something Abraham doesn't know exists.”

Wyatt lifted his head.

“What?”

The tape clicked.

Nothing.

Then Evelyn’s voice returned.

“I gave it to him when he was eleven.”

Wyatt looked confused.

“A blue truck.”

My son froze.

I remembered it.

A small metal Heartland Freight toy truck Evelyn had given Wyatt for Christmas.

He kept it for years.

“Where is it?”

Wyatt stared toward Sabrina.

She went pale.

“I don't know.”

“Yes, you do.”

“I threw away his childhood junk.”

Piper suddenly whispered:

“No, you didn't.”

Sabrina turned.

“Mom.”

Piper removed something else from Evelyn’s coat.

A tiny blue metal truck.

Wyatt stared.

“You stole it.”

Piper began crying.

“I didn't know what it was. Sabrina told me to search your things.”

Sabrina looked furious.

Irving shouted:

“Shut up, Piper.”

Wrong thing to say.

Piper stepped away from him.

For the first time, the Palmer family cracked.

I took the truck.

The bottom panel opened.

Inside was a narrow brass cylinder.

Samuel whispered:

“Key.”

“To what?”

Margaret finally answered.

“A freight locker.”

Everybody looked at her.

She realized too late.

She knew what the key opened.

Samuel slowly turned.

“You told me you didn't know what Evelyn hid.”

Margaret recovered.

“I guessed.”

“No.”

I looked at her.

“You didn't.”

Wyatt suddenly began laughing again.

Sabrina snapped:

“What now?”

My son looked at his wife.

“You tortured me for a signature.”

Then he looked toward Margaret.

“But she never needed my signature.”

Margaret's smile vanished.

Wyatt nodded toward the blue truck.

“She needed me to tell her where that was.”

And suddenly Sabrina understood something terrible.

May you like

She had never been Margaret’s partner.

She had been disposable labor.
