Chapter 11 - Sabrina’s Choice

Sabrina froze.

Wyatt didn't.

He pulled her down.

The shot struck the wall.

Chaos followed.

Samuel tackled Peter.

Margaret dragged Caroline behind a desk.

Irving went after Peter.

I went to Wyatt.

The police entered seconds later.

Nobody died.

That mattered.

Peter was arrested.

Irving too.

Sabrina sat beside Wyatt on the floor, shaking.

He looked at her.

“You helped them.”

“I know.”

“You watched them hurt me.”

“I know.”

“And now you saved me.”

She started crying.

“I know.”

Three truths.

None erased another.

That was the mistake people made with redemption.

They treated one good choice like an eraser.

It wasn't.

It was simply the first different choice.

Wyatt looked away.

“I can't forgive you.”

“I know.”

“But I'll tell them you helped me tonight.”

Sabrina nodded.

That was all she deserved.

Maybe more than she expected.

Peter began talking within hours.

Men like Peter love control until control disappears.

Then they sell information.

He admitted everything.

The illegal freight operation began decades earlier.

He discovered organized theft routes using Heartland trailers.

Instead of reporting them, he took control.

Jonathan found out.

Peter killed him and manipulated evidence toward Irving.

Samuel discovered irregularities next.

Peter forged my authorization and arranged the truck explosion.

Evelyn uncovered pieces of the scheme.

She hid Samuel.

Then recruited Margaret to trace finances.

North Meridian was created.

But grief corrupted Margaret.

She began believing Heartland itself was responsible.

Peter quietly fed that belief for years.

“He turned us against each other,” Samuel said.

“Yes.”

“But why wait?”

Peter smiled.

“Because Abraham kept control.”

He couldn't dismantle Heartland while I remained active.

So he waited for succession.

For Wyatt.

For marriage.

For division.

He didn't arrange Sabrina meeting Wyatt.

Margaret did.

But Peter encouraged her.

Every conspiracy had become useful to him.

Then Detective Chen asked the question I had almost forgotten.

“Where is Evelyn Yates?”

Peter stopped smiling.

I leaned forward.

“You know.”

“No.”

Lie.

Chen placed Evelyn's post-death video on the table.

Peter watched.

His face changed.

“She shouldn't have made that.”

“Where is she?”

He laughed quietly.

“You still think Evelyn was hiding from me?”

My pulse slowed.

“Who was she hiding from?”

Peter looked toward Samuel.

“Ask him.”

Samuel stood.

“What?”

Peter smiled.

“Tell Abraham where Evelyn went after hospice.”

Samuel went pale.

I turned.

“Samuel?”

He couldn't meet my eyes.

My brother had known.

Again.

“Samuel.”

“She survived longer than doctors expected.”

“How long?”

“Three months.”

Three months.

“And you saw her?”

“Yes.”

Something inside me cracked.

“You let me bury an empty coffin?”

“She asked me to.”

“Why?”

“Because she discovered someone was monitoring Wyatt.”

“Who?”

Samuel looked toward Sabrina.

“No.”

Not Sabrina.

She had been too young.

Her family.

Specifically—

Piper.

Sabrina's mother.

The woman everyone had treated as frightened and irrelevant.

Samuel whispered:

“Piper Palmer wasn't Irving's innocent wife.”

Pause.

“She was Peter Larkin's original partner.”

Then my phone rang.

Piper.

Video call.

I answered.

She was sitting inside my old pickup truck.

My dashboard had been torn apart.

She held Evelyn's sealed succession document.

Then she smiled.

“Thank you for telling everyone exactly where to find it, Abraham.”

Behind her, through the windshield, I could see a hospital entrance.

Wyatt's hospital.

Piper whispered:

“Now I just need the heir's signature.”

And the camera turned.

Someone was sitting beside her.

Not Wyatt.

A woman.

Thin.

Silver-haired.

Older.

But I recognized her instantly.

May you like

Evelyn.

My dead wife opened her eyes.
