Chapter 12 - The Woman in the Pickup

For several seconds, I forgot how to speak.
Evelyn.
Older.
Frail.
Alive.
“Abraham,” she whispered.
Then Piper ended the call.
I looked at Samuel.
“You knew?”
“No.”
For once, I believed him.
Evelyn had survived three months after hospice.
Then vanished even from Samuel.
He assumed she eventually died under another identity.
Apparently she had survived seven years.
Why hadn't she returned?
Why hadn't she called?
Why was Piper with her?
We traced my pickup through an old Heartland telematics unit Piper hadn't discovered.
She was driving toward Omaha.
Not away from Heartland.
Toward its oldest distribution center.
The place Evelyn originally purchased before I knew the company existed.
Wyatt couldn't travel.
I refused to let him try.
“Bring Mom home,” he said.
I looked at him.
“If she wants to come.”
That surprised him.
It surprised me too.
Old Abraham would have demanded explanations.
New Abraham was beginning to understand that love didn't equal ownership.
We intercepted Piper at the Omaha terminal.
My pickup sat inside Warehouse One.
Dashboard destroyed.
Door open.
No Piper.
Evelyn sat inside the old dispatch office.
Alone.
I stopped in the doorway.
She looked up.
Seven years disappeared.
Then returned all at once.
“You look old,” she said.
“So do you.”
She smiled.
I nearly broke.
I sat across from my wife.
“Why?”
Her eyes filled.
“Because Peter found me before I could come home.”
He didn't kill her.
He threatened Wyatt.
Evelyn disappeared voluntarily to protect our son.
Piper helped arrange identities.
At first.
Then Piper realized Evelyn possessed evidence and the succession designation.
She kept Evelyn isolated.
Not physically imprisoned for seven years.
Something more subtle.
False reports.
Fake surveillance photographs.
Claims that Wyatt was constantly watched.
That returning would get him killed.
Fear became the cage.
“Why believe her?”
Evelyn looked ashamed.
“Because she proved Peter had reached our family once.”
“How?”
“Sabrina.”
My stomach tightened.
Sabrina had met Wyatt because Margaret arranged it.
But Piper encouraged the relationship because it gave her access to my son.
Layers again.
Evelyn started suspecting the truth two years ago.
She tried contacting Wyatt.
Messages vanished.
Then recently, she escaped the identity Piper had built around her.
“Why were you in the truck?”
“She found me first.”
“Where is Piper?”
Evelyn pointed toward the warehouse.
“She wants the original North Meridian ledger.”
Of course.
Money again.
But Evelyn shook her head.
“No.”
“What?”
“Piper doesn't want money.”
“Then what?”
“She wants a name removed.”
From the ledger.
Her own.
Piper wasn't merely Peter's partner.
She was one of the original illegal freight clients.
The person who introduced Peter to the network.
Before Irving.
Before Sabrina.
Before Margaret's revenge.
Piper had started the chain.
Then a gunshot echoed through the warehouse.
I stood.
Evelyn grabbed my wrist.
“Abraham.”
“Yes?”
“Don't go alone.”
Seven years ago, I would have.
This time, I called Detective Chen.
Samuel.
Federal agents.
Then Evelyn and I walked toward Warehouse One together.
Inside, Piper stood beside a burning metal barrel.
Pages were already turning black.
She held the original ledger.
And beside her stood Margaret.
Margaret wasn't restrained.
They were working together.
Margaret looked at Evelyn.
Then at me.
“I'm sorry, Abraham.”
Piper smiled.
“You should be.”
Then Margaret suddenly ripped the ledger from Piper's hands and threw it across the concrete toward me.
Piper's face twisted.
Margaret shouted:
May you like
“RUN!”
And the warehouse lights went out.
