Chapter 9 - Helena Vale

Helena Vale was alive.
That fact detonated another family myth.
Eleanor had been told Helena died in Europe twenty-five years earlier after struggling with addiction.
There was a grave.
Private service.
No body viewed.
Pattern.
But unlike Travis’s false death, Helena had not been murdered or buried under another identity.
She had entered a long-term witness relocation arrangement after cooperating in a separate financial investigation involving Arthur’s overseas dealings.
Her death had been staged administratively with government involvement? That is too big/unrealistic. Better she disappeared voluntarily with changed identity due coercive family, no official fake death, family told Eleanor she died. There was memorial, no actual death certificate maybe? Could work.
Helena lived under name Lena Ward in Arizona.
Why watch Travis graduation?
Because she knew.
She had known Arthur stole Eleanor’s baby.
At twenty-six, Helena overheard father discussing transfer.
She tried confront.
Arthur threatened cut her off and have her committed? She eventually fled family.
Years later she tracked Victor and Travis independently.
Why not tell Eleanor?
Fear.
And shame.
Again.
She saw Travis from distance multiple times.
Margaret noticed once.
That may have prompted Margaret’s later investigation? Let's connect.
At graduation, Margaret saw Helena.
Believed she was Eleanor because twins/sisters looked similar? They are sisters not twins, but resemblance strong. Helena approached Margaret later and told partial truth:
“Travis was born a Vale.”
Margaret dismissed at first.
Years later, after finding papers, remembered and contacted Helena.
Helena gave her copies of Arthur’s original memo.
Those copies?
Hidden in Helena’s safe.
This provided strongest evidence original scheme:
Arthur instructed attorney to produce emergency guardianship without Eleanor informed consent.
Victor received baby.
Conrad witnessed arrangement.
Original wrongdoing proven civilly/documentary even if prosecution limitation complicated.
Why had Helena stayed silent after Margaret died?
“I thought Victor killed her.”
She feared.
“Why not police?”
“I had documents proving wealthy people committed old adoption fraud, not murder.”
“And Eleanor?”
Helena cried.
“I had abandoned her once already. Every year made next call harder.”
Eleanor met sister for first time in twenty-five years.
Not joyful reunion.
She slapped Helena? Better no physical. She simply said:
“You let me bury a child who was alive.”
Helena:
“Yes.”
“You watched him graduate.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me grieve?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I was afraid of Dad.”
“He was dead by then.”
Helena broke.
“Then I was afraid of what you would think of me.”
There.
Fear outlived threat.
Eleanor walked away.
Later maybe relationship rebuilds slowly.
Then distinctive mole.
Helena had it too.
Travis’s mother Margaret had not genetically shared it, contradiction with initial story.
We need resolve: The mark Travis remembered on Margaret was not a mole. In childhood he misread it. Margaret had a small dark tattoo/mark? Hmm initial says same mole his mother had. We need explain. Perhaps Margaret, after discovering truth? But he saw in childhood. Could be Eleanor's family hereditary birthmark and Margaret had it? Impossible. Could reveal Travis’s memory fused a photograph? Need fix coherently.
Maybe the woman he remembered with mark wasn't Margaret: A childhood recurring memory of a woman at his bedside he called "Mom"? But he distinctly says mother had it. We can reveal Margaret had a small circular scar from a benign mole removal, similar coincidence. Yet that coincidence triggered discovery but was not genetic proof. Fine. Eleanor's mark only looked identical under warm light. Medical photo later showed Margaret’s was surgical scar/mole at nearby spot. The real truth came from DNA, not mark. This makes clue coincidental but emotionally plausible. But user premise implies same. Could say Margaret had intentionally tattooed a small dark mark at same spot because Victor insisted she resemble a photo of Eleanor? That's creepy and implausible.
Alternative hereditary mark could be due to Eleanor and Margaret being half-sisters? Then Travis's adoptive mother is biological aunt, still strange but not impossible. Hmm. We can make Margaret was Arthur Vale’s unacknowledged daughter? Then she and Eleanor half-sisters, same family mark. But then Travis raised by biological aunt and Victor. This makes more conspiracy. But initial says family entire life lie. Could be huge. Yet then Victor marries Margaret partly as part of arrangement? Too much.
Maybe let's make Margaret and Eleanor were maternal half-sisters unknowingly. That explains identical familial nevus and why Arthur trusted Margaret for placement. Was Margaret aware? No. Arthur had fathered Margaret through affair with her mother 32 years prior, concealed. Then he placed Eleanor's baby with his unacknowledged daughter, keeping child in bloodline. This is baroque but coherent. Need introduce now. Could be revealed by Helena records. Let's do: Helena has a family medical file showing Arthur quietly paid Margaret’s mother, Joan Hale. DNA between preserved Margaret sample impossible? But old hospital records list Arthur as confidential father? Better Arthur's diary. Hmm.
But then Victor married Arthur's illegitimate daughter Margaret, no issue. Travis was raised by biological half-aunt. The mark shared due genetics. Nice.
Let's write Helena reveals Arthur had an affair with Joan Hale; Margaret was his unacknowledged daughter and thus Eleanor's half-sister. Arthur chose her specifically as adoptive mother because he wanted baby within bloodline but under control. Margaret herself didn't know until discovering papers. This deepens her horror. Great.
So Travis saw same mark because Eleanor and Margaret were half-sisters. Nice.
