Chapter 2 - The Child Who Died Twice

Travis did not scream.

That frightened Eleanor more.

He sat on the edge of the bed with the DNA report between both hands while the wedding music continued faintly three floors below.

Probability of parent-child relationship exceeded 99.99%.

He read it again.

And again.

His mind refused to transform ink into reality.

“My mother was Margaret Hale.”

“Yes.”

“She raised me.”

“Yes.”

“She gave birth to me.”

“No.”

His eyes snapped toward Eleanor.

“Don’t.”

“I’m not trying to take her place.”

“Then stop talking like she wasn’t my mother.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“You’re right.”

That answer disarmed him more than argument would have.

Margaret had packed his lunches.

Stayed awake when he had pneumonia.

Worked at a pharmacy until midnight when Victor’s contracting business failed.

Whatever blood said, Margaret had been his mother.

But she had also lied.

Or had she?

“Did Margaret know?”

“I don’t know.”

Travis laughed once.

Nothing about it contained humor.

“You married me without knowing whether the woman who raised me helped steal me?”

“I stopped the legal marriage.”

“You still stood in front of everyone.”

“I needed you away from Victor.”

“You could have told me before the ceremony.”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Eleanor’s answer came slowly.

“Fear.”

At least she did not call it protection.

Forty-eight hours earlier, Eleanor’s private investigator had delivered records from St. Catherine’s Women’s Hospital, a private facility that closed twenty-three years ago.

Eleanor had given birth there at thirty-one.

She had been unmarried.

Her father, industrialist Arthur Vale, considered the pregnancy a scandal.

The child’s father, a musician named Samuel Cruz, died in a motorcycle accident two months before the birth.

After emergency delivery, Eleanor was sedated.

Her father told her the baby had died.

No body.

Closed casket.

Private burial.

Eleanor had spent years believing she buried her son.

“Why investigate now?” Travis asked.

“Because my father’s estate attorney died in January.”

Among his archived records was a payment ledger.

One entry:

V. HALE — relocation / infant custodial arrangement.

$75,000.

Victor Hale.

Travis’s father.

Eleanor hired investigators.

Then found sealed nursery records.

Baby Male Vale had not died.

He had been transferred from St. Catherine’s under an emergency guardianship order.

The order was fraudulent.

Receiving guardians:

Victor and Margaret Hale.

Travis stood.

“I’m going downstairs.”

“No.”

“He owes me an answer.”

“Yes.”

“Then move.”

Marcus knocked from outside again.

“Mrs. Vale, Victor is becoming aggressive.”

Eleanor called:

“Do not let him upstairs.”

Travis stared.

“You have armed men keeping my father from me?”

“They’re keeping everyone away until you decide what you want.”

That mattered.

Not trapping him.

Choice.

Travis opened his phone.

Twenty-seven messages from Victor.

DO NOT LISTEN TO HER.

COME DOWN ALONE.

SHE IS LYING.

Then the last:

ASK HER WHAT HAPPENED TO MARGARET.

Travis went still.

Eleanor saw screen.

“What?”

He showed her.

For the first time that night, Eleanor looked genuinely confused.

“What happened to Margaret?”

Travis’s mother had died twelve years earlier after a rapidly progressing illness diagnosed as autoimmune failure.

At least that was what he had been told.

Eleanor whispered:

“I never met her.”

Travis believed she meant it.

Then another message appeared.

Victor:

YOUR MOTHER FOUND OUT WHO YOU WERE.

THAT’S WHY SHE DIED.

Travis stared at the words.

His hands began shaking.

He called Victor.

Eleanor did not stop him.

Victor answered immediately.

“Son.”

“Do not call me that until you answer.”

Silence.

“Did you know Eleanor gave birth to me?”

Victor breathed heavily.

“Yes.”

The room seemed to tilt.

“Did Mom know?”

A long pause.

“Not at first.”

“When?”

“Years later.”

“How many?”

Victor did not answer.

“Dad.”

“Twelve years ago.”

Travis closed his eyes.

The same year Margaret died.

Then Victor whispered:

May you like

“She found the adoption papers three weeks before she got sick.”

Cliffhanger: Margaret discovered Travis had been stolen from Eleanor only weeks before her sudden death.
