Chapter 4 - The Envelope Margaret Left Behind

Dr. Helen Avery was seventy-four and retired.

She lived outside Santa Fe.

Naomi verified identity before Travis spoke to her.

Helen had been Margaret’s primary-care physician for nine years.

Three weeks before Margaret became critically ill, she arrived at Helen’s office without appointment.

Agitated.

Carrying an envelope.

“She told me she had learned something terrible about your birth,” Helen said.

Travis gripped phone.

“What exactly?”

“She said Victor had lied to both of you.”

“Did she say he stole me?”

“She said she found papers showing you were not legally surrendered by your biological mother.”

Eleanor closed eyes.

Helen continued.

Margaret believed Victor and Arthur Vale had arranged the transfer.

She blamed herself too.

Why?

She had wanted a child desperately after years of infertility.

Victor told her a young unmarried mother had voluntarily surrendered a newborn.

Margaret never met Eleanor.

Never saw signed consent.

She trusted Victor.

“When did she realize?”

“After finding a locked file in your father’s workshop.”

The file contained:

payment receipt from Arthur Vale,

fraudulent guardianship documents,

a photograph of Eleanor in hospital,

and correspondence about the trust.

Margaret was devastated.

“She said, ‘I raised someone else’s stolen child.’”

Travis broke.

Eleanor began crying too.

But Helen said:

“I told her something important. Raising you with love did not make her responsible for a lie she did not know.”

Travis wiped face.

“Why didn’t she tell me immediately?”

“She was trying to verify before changing your life.”

Same mistake everyone kept making.

Waiting for perfect truth.

Then Margaret became ill.

Helen initially thought autoimmune disease.

After hospital admission, liver enzymes rose unexpectedly fast.

Margaret told Helen privately:

“I think Victor is giving me something.”

Did Helen report?

“She withdrew accusation the next morning.”

Why?

She said she had been confused.

Victor was present.

Helen remained uneasy but lacked evidence.

Then Margaret gave her envelope.

“If something happens, give this to Travis when he’s old enough to understand.”

Travis laughed bitterly.

“I was seventeen.”

“I waited until your eighteenth birthday.”

“What happened?”

“I called Victor first.”

There.

Helen’s voice broke.

“That was my mistake.”

Victor told her Travis knew everything, wanted no contact with Eleanor, and believed Margaret’s suspicions were symptoms of illness.

Helen accepted.

Years passed.

She moved practices.

Then saw wedding announcement online.

Travis Hale marrying Eleanor Vale.

She nearly fell out of chair.

She had been trying to reach him for two days.

“What’s in envelope?”

“I never opened it.”

Naomi arranged secure courier.

It arrived next morning.

Travis stared at Margaret’s handwriting.

For Travis.

He opened.

First:

a letter.

My sweet boy,

If you are reading this, I failed to tell you something while I still could.

You were not abandoned.

The woman who gave birth to you was told you died.

Travis stopped.

Could not continue.

Eleanor asked:

“Do you want me to leave?”

He nodded.

She left immediately.

That mattered.

Hours later he finished.

Margaret wrote that she had loved him from first night Victor brought him home.

She believed adoption legitimate.

When she discovered truth, she intended to help reunite Travis and Eleanor.

Then:

Victor says Eleanor would destroy our family if you ever knew.

I think he is afraid of something larger than losing you.

Another sheet contained copies of financial records.

Arthur Vale had paid Victor not $75,000 once.

Payments continued for twenty years.

Total:

$1.4 million.

Consulting fees.

Property transfers.

Debt forgiveness.

Margaret wrote:

Your father was not paid only to take you.

He was paid to keep you hidden.

Then final page.

A photograph.

Victor and Conrad Vale.

Together.

Taken six months before Margaret’s death.

May you like

Conrad was the man who would inherit company control if Eleanor had no living child.

Cliffhanger: Travis’s adoptive father had remained financially connected to the very man whose fortune depended on Travis never being recognized as Eleanor’s son.
