Ethan was eight years old in 1994.
What meeting could involve him?
Not adoption.
DNA confirmed parents.
Not custody.
Not inheritance.
Not secret medical experiment.
The meeting was with private school security consultant after kidnapping threat.
Cole family had received ransom-style letter naming Ethan’s school route.
Police investigated.
No actual abduction occurred.
Henry wanted increase security quietly.
Harrison attended one meeting pretending be Henry because Henry was traveling.
Why impersonate rather than simply represent brother?
Harrison believed threat came from disgruntled Briar Ridge worker and feared acknowledging Henry absence could expose travel.

“Who?”

The “child” was life-sized training mannequin photographed at distance.
No real child risked.

Henry's letter clarified.
Harrison falsified report afterward to claim Henry personally approved plan.
When Henry discovered, he terminated decoy practice entirely.

Henry’s secret about Ethan was not parentage.
It was that a kidnapping threat had once caused family to normalize deception and impersonation.
Eleanor knew.
She had hidden it to protect Ethan from childhood fear.

Thomas wore Henry’s coat.

“Why did David steal Henry’s letter?”
David admitted Peter asked him retrieve anything mentioning Thomas.
David saw sealed Ethan envelope, feared it might destroy Thomas reputation, took it impulsively.
After fall investigation escalated, guilt forced return.
Again no mastermind.
A network of people acting from fear, loyalty and resentment.
Ethan sat with Eleanor.
“Did you ever think Thomas was Dad's brother?”
“No.”
“Did Dad?”
“He checked quietly once after learning Arthur Lane connection.”
DNA/genealogy showed no close relation.
“So Noah's statement was just resemblance.”
“Yes.”
“And cufflink?”
“Dad's.”
“Given to Thomas?”
“Yes.”
“Thomas caused your fall?”
“No. I caused my fall trying to stop him.”
“Claire?”
“Didn't touch me.”
“David?”
“Was hiding but didn't touch me.”
“Was anyone trying to hurt you?”
“No.”
Finally.
Then Ethan asked:
“Why were you so frightened when you saw HC-2 at hospital?”
Eleanor looked down.
“Because Henry once told me if Thomas ever returned it, it meant he was done protecting our version of story.”
That was all.
Not code for murder.
Not inheritance.
Truth.
The next morning Ethan arranged meeting with Thomas, Peter, Eleanor and independent company historian.
Everything would be recorded.
Everything current mystery would be closed.
Before leaving, Noah tugged Ethan’s sleeve.
“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“If that man wasn't you, why did he have your thing?”
Ethan looked at gold cufflink.
“Because before it was mine, it belonged to Grandpa.”
Noah nodded.
“And Grandpa gave it to him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Grandpa owed him an apology.”
Noah thought about that.
“Did he say sorry?”
“Not well enough.”
Then Noah asked:
“Are you going to?”
Ethan looked toward Thomas waiting beyond doorway.
“Yes.”
And for first time, HC-2 stopped looking like evidence of impossible second Ethan.
