Chapter 12 - HC-1
Everyone had focused on HC-2.
Thomas’s cufflink.
But Ethan’s other cufflink was HC-1.
Supposedly original.
Jeweler reexamined.
It was original.
Henry had kept HC-1 until giving Ethan pair at twenty-five.
But if Thomas held HC-2 from 2001 onward, how did Ethan receive “pair” from Henry in 2011?
Simple.
Henry commissioned replica HC-2 and gave Ethan HC-1 plus copy.
He never told him.
Thus original pair was intentionally separated.
HC-1 to Ethan.
HC-2 remained Thomas.
Why?
Henry’s private note explained:
ONE FOR MY SON.
ONE FOR THE MAN I OWE.
Not inheritance.
Not coded ownership.
Not secret corporate shares.
Symbolic.
Henry knew Thomas had been wronged.
He still lacked courage to repair publicly.
Cufflink became inadequate private apology.
Then photograph note “ask who had HC-1” referred another period.
During 1994 regulatory meeting, Harrison wore HC-1.
Henry had lent it? Evidence showed Harrison took it from Henry office.
Investigator remembered gold cufflink.
Harrison used it to reinforce impersonation.
A face plus Henry’s cufflink became false credential.
This was why Henry later had HC-1 engraved microscopically and documented custody.
He realized family objects had enabled identity confusion.
Ironically, years later Noah used HC-2 to identify Thomas as “Ethan-like” man.
The same object once designed as status symbol had become clue.
Then investigators reconstructed staircase exactly.
Thomas entered using reactivated therapist code supplied indirectly by Peter.
Noah saw him first.
Thomas gave Noah HC-2 for Ethan.
David Lane was already hidden in east gallery, trespassing for documents.
Eleanor arrived.
Saw Thomas.
For a fraction second, age, posture, cufflink and academy ring made her think Henry.
She called “Henry.”
Then recognized Thomas.
She reached to stop him.
Thomas stepped back.
Eleanor's own momentum and fragile balance caused her miss railing and fall.
Thomas did not push.
Claire did not push.
David did not push.
Noah witnessed enough to know “Grandma wasn't alone,” but fear made sequence fragmentary.
Thomas fled via service stair because Peter had convinced him Claire would accuse him.
David left through same route moments later.
Two door movements.
Shadow likely David.
That solved physical mystery.
Then why Claire terrified at cufflink?
Anonymous warning from Peter’s spoofed number had told her HC-2 meant Eleanor lost control.
Peter admitted writing.
He wanted Claire pressure Eleanor into opening safe.
He did not expect staircase accident.
Peter faced consequences for unauthorized access, impersonation/spoofing, DNA misuse and trespass conspiracy depending legal findings.
David faced trespass consequences.
Neither had attempted murder.
Then Eleanor asked Ethan privately:
“Do you hate your father now?”
“No.”
She looked surprised.
“I know more about him.”
Henry had protected workers eventually.
He also prioritized company.
He used Thomas as decoy.
He failed correct reputation.
He tried apologize privately.
He loved family.
He was weak in places Ethan had imagined him strong.
People could contain all those truths.
Then Ethan gave HC-1 to Thomas temporarily.
Thomas shook head.
“No.”
“It belongs with HC-2.”
“No. Your father decided where each belonged.”
Thomas placed HC-2 beside Ethan’s.
“I'm done carrying his apology.”
Ethan looked at pair reunited for first time in decades.
Thomas added:
“If you want make it mean something, don't keep it in safe.”
“What should I do?”
“Correct record.”
Ethan did.
But when corporate archivist opened Henry’s sealed personnel correction packet, there was one final unsigned page.
At bottom:
THOMAS REED WAS SELECTED FOR PROTECTIVE DECOY DUTY BECAUSE OF PHYSICAL RESEMBLANCE TO HENRY COLE. THIS PRACTICE WAS IMPROPERLY EXTENDED BEYOND ITS ORIGINAL SECURITY PURPOSE.
Below it:
THE PERSON WHO FIRST SUGGESTED THOMAS AS MY DOUBLE WAS ELEANOR.
