Chapter 7 - Ethan's Mother Came Back

Victoria Mercer had not attended the wedding.

Officially, she was in France.

Apparently she had lied.

She stood in the red-room doorway wearing a cream coat and expressionless eyes.

Ethan whispered:

“What are you doing here?”

Victoria looked at Lily.

“You frightened everyone.”

Lily moved behind Claire.

That mattered.

Children did not always understand conspiracies.

They understood whom they feared.

Claire stepped between them.

“Were you in the laundry room?”

Victoria smiled.

“No.”

Lily whispered:

“Yes.”

Victoria's smile vanished.

Ethan looked between them.

“Mom?”

“She is confused.”

“I'm not!”

Lily's voice cracked.

Victoria stepped forward.

Claire blocked her.

“Don't.”

Victoria looked almost amused.

“You've known this family for eleven months.”

“Long enough.”

“You think so?”

Ethan demanded an answer.

Victoria finally admitted she had been at the venue.

She learned Noah planned to appear.

She came to stop him.

“Why?”

“Because your brother destroys everything he touches.”

“What did you do to Lily?”

“Nothing.”

Lily started trembling.

Claire watched closely.

No smile.

Interesting.

The strange smile appeared around specific kinds of fear.

Not all fear.

Victoria noticed Claire studying Lily.

“She still does that?”

Claire looked at her.

“Does what?”

“Smiles when she's hiding something.”

Another person who knew.

Rachel had documented it.

Victoria remembered.

Lily stared at her grandmother.

Then smiled.

Slowly.

Victoria's expression changed.

There.

Again.

But now Claire understood more.

The smile wasn't simple stress.

Lily used it deliberately sometimes.

A mask she had learned adults underestimated.

“What are you hiding now?” Claire asked gently.

Lily reached beneath her wet-party-dress bag.

A phone.

Not hers.

Victoria's.

She had stolen it at the wedding.

Victoria lunged.

Claire stepped back.

The investigator took the phone.

“Password?”

Lily recited six digits.

Victoria stared.

“How?”

“Mommy's birthday.”

Victoria had used Rachel's birthday as her password.

Why?

Inside were messages to an unknown contact.

HE'S COMING.

KEEP NOAH AWAY FROM ETHAN.

Then:

THE GIRL KNOWS TOO MUCH.

Claire looked at Lily.

Victoria denied that “the girl” meant her.

Then another message appeared.

Sent fifteen minutes before Ethan found Lily:

HANDLE THE MACHINE.

Ethan's face went blank.

“Mom…”

Victoria closed her eyes.

It seemed solved.

Too easily.

Claire had learned to distrust easy answers.

“Who did you send that to?”

Victoria refused.

The investigator traced the contact label.

A single letter:

C.

Then Ethan's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Noah's voice.

“Don't let Mom leave.”

Ethan stiffened.

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

“Did you close Lily inside the washer?”

“I closed the door because Victoria was coming. I thought Lily could hide for ten seconds.”

“Then someone turned it on.”

Silence.

Noah whispered:

“That wasn't Mom.”

Everyone looked at Victoria.

Ethan asked:

May you like

“How do you know?”

“Because I saw who did it.”
