Chapter 3 - What Rachel Hid Before She Died

The wedding never resumed.

By midnight, the flowers were still fresh but the marriage had not happened.

Claire returned to Ethan's house only because her belongings were there.

Ethan stayed with Lily at his sister's home.

Claire went directly to the office.

The brass key fit.

Inside the locked drawer were insurance papers.

Old photographs.

Rachel's death certificate.

A sealed envelope.

And a digital voice recorder.

The recorder was seven years old.

Claire pressed PLAY.

Static.

Then a woman's voice.

“If Ethan ever tells you I was sick, don't believe him.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Rachel.

She pressed PLAY again.

“If something happens to me, Lily cannot stay in that house.”

The recording ended.

Twenty-one seconds.

Claire listened five times.

Then noticed the envelope.

Written across it:

FOR THE WOMAN ETHAN MARRIES NEXT.

Claire sat down.

Rachel had written a letter to a woman who did not yet exist in Ethan's life.

The first paragraph was ordinary.

If you're reading this, I'm probably gone.

The second was not.

Ethan has a way of making you believe protecting him is the same as loving him.

Claire felt cold.

Rachel described strange financial transfers.

Private investigators.

Someone following her.

A locked storage unit.

Then a sentence:

If Lily ever starts smiling when she is frightened, believe the smile, not the tears.

Claire read it again.

The smile.

Rachel knew.

According to the letter, Lily had developed a peculiar response as a toddler.

When overwhelmed, she sometimes smiled.

Not because she was happy.

A stress response.

Rachel worried people would misunderstand it.

Claire remembered the wedding.

Lily emerging behind Ethan.

That tiny smile.

Had Claire misread it?

Maybe Lily had not been triumphant.

Maybe she had been terrified.

But terrified of whom?

The letter continued.

There is something Ethan does not know I discovered.

Then the page ended.

The next sheet had been torn out.

Claire searched the drawer.

Nothing.

Someone removed the most important page.

She checked the tiny camera from the wedding.

Its memory card remained.

The footage began three hours before the ceremony.

Laundry room.

Empty.

Then Lily entered.

Alone.

Claire leaned toward the screen.

Lily checked behind her.

Then walked directly to the washing machine.

She opened it herself.

Claire's heart began pounding.

Lily climbed inside.

On purpose.

She pulled a bottle of diluted soap solution from behind a hamper and poured some over her dress.

Then she looked directly at the hidden camera.

And smiled.

Claire covered her mouth.

Lily had staged it.

But then—

someone entered.

Only legs appeared.

Dark trousers.

Black shoes.

Lily's smile vanished instantly.

She tried to climb out.

The person shoved the machine door closed.

Claire shot to her feet.

Lily had planned to be found inside.

But she had not planned to be trapped.

The unknown person bent toward the camera.

A hand reached forward.

The image went black.

Claire rewound.

Paused.

Zoomed mentally on the only visible detail.

A man's hand.

On the smallest finger—

a pale circular scar.

Claire had seen that scar before.

She looked toward a framed photograph on Ethan's desk.

Ethan stood beside his older brother, Noah.

Noah Mercer.

The man Ethan claimed he had not spoken to in eleven years.

And on Noah's hand was the same circular scar.
