Sophie's mother was Evelyn Lane.
Not related to Claire despite the surname coincidence Sophie had always joked about.
Except even that was false.
Her real name:
Evelyn Mercer Vale.
Martin's daughter.
Charles Mercer's goddaughter.
Raised around the family.
Trained to manage information.
The second Keeper.
Sophie had hidden this from Claire for twelve years.
Claire felt almost numb.
“You knew?”
Sophie cried.
“Not everything.”
“Stop saying that.”
“I knew my mother worked for Charles. I didn't know you were his daughter until Rachel contacted me.”
“Why did you become my friend?”
Sophie could barely answer.
Because Evelyn told her to.
College had not been chance.
Sophie was placed near Claire.
Originally to observe her.
Charles wanted information about his hidden daughter.
But Sophie and Claire genuinely became friends.
That was the complication nobody planned.
Years later, when Rachel contacted Sophie, Sophie turned against her mother.

Yet the Keeper continued calling Lily.

“The Keeper was at the wedding before us.”
“How do you know?”

The wedding musicians had been rehearsing.
And a bell.
The service elevator bell.
Claire requested venue audio.
One microphone near the ceremony stage had recorded background sound during rehearsal.
At 11:14 a.m., faintly:
a man's voice.
“Everything is ready.”
Claire knew the voice.
Ethan knew it too.
Their wedding coordinator.

Forty-five.
Polished.
Friendly.

Police searched his credentials.
Fake.
Daniel Cross did not exist before nine years earlier.
Fingerprints returned another identity.

He had coordinated Claire and Ethan's “chance” meeting.

The wedding.
He knew Lily's routines.

But why?
Why allow Lily and Sophie to stage an accusation against Claire?
Because he wanted the wedding stopped.
That made no sense if the marriage consolidated the shares.
Unless the marriage was never his final goal.
Martin finally explained.
The founder shares would consolidate only after genetic verification.
That verification would expose Claire as Charles's daughter.

Lucas did not want the marriage completed.
He wanted Claire brought close enough to the family to uncover her identity—
then turn against Ethan.
The washing-machine incident was designed to detonate the relationship at the altar.
Lily and Sophie thought they were following Rachel's plan.
Lucas quietly amplified it.
Everyone had been moving pieces on the same board without realizing another player controlled the table.
Police went to arrest Lucas.
His hotel room was empty.
On the bed:
Lily's original wet pink dress.
Claire stared.
That dress had been taken as evidence.
Someone had removed it from police custody.
Pinned to it was a note.
