Chapter 12 - Celeste Tells the Truth

Celeste decided to give a formal statement to Mercer Dynamics ethics archive.
Not PR.
Internal governance history.
Why?
Future boards needed know how leak happened.
She said:
“I leaked Mara’s ArcSpan memo because Damian asked.”
No euphemism.
“I knew it was internal.”
Good.
“I told myself I was helping him understand industry.”
Then:
“When his fund traded shortly afterward, I suspected connection.”
“Did you ask?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because answer frightened me.”
There.
Then:
“I later learned he had other sources. I stopped sending information and warned Elias.”
Why not report compliance?
“Family.”
The word alone.
Then:
“I let Mara’s reputation remain damaged because correcting it would expose me.”
That was key.
I watched recording before archive final.
It hurt.
But useful.
Then she spoke directly:
“Mara, I am sorry.”
No forgiveness demand.
Then:
“Damian, I taught you that I would hide your mistakes. Elias taught you he would fund them. You taught yourself that survival proved correctness.”
Strong.
Then:
“I love you. None of that is protection.”
Damian watched later.
He called mother.
No screaming.
They began rebuilding differently.
Then my own archive statement.
I admitted:
I agreed to silent departure.
I stayed hidden longer than necessary.
I allowed Grandfather’s private process to become substitute for formal reporting.
I benefited from secret trust structure I did not fully understand.
Not equal blame.
But governance lessons.
Then Samuel.
He recorded:
“I advised Elias on lawful structures but should have challenged secrecy more aggressively.”
Good.
Institution learning.
Then board adopted policy:
whistleblower technical findings cannot be buried under reputation settlement without independent review.
Would have protected younger me.
Then one year later, an engineer at Mercer Dynamics reported safety concern.
A major product launch delayed.
Stock dipped.
Damian texted:
Your favorite kind of day.
I replied:
Expensive honesty.
Later defect validated.
Delay prevented recall.
The system worked.
Then Mara's asthma.
I had not discussed health beyond inhaler.
After wake, my pulmonologist adjusted treatment.
Stress made symptoms worse.
Damian had endangered me, but no permanent injury.
At next family event, I carried two inhalers? One backup. Smart.
Not symbolic weakness.
Medical reality.
Then one funny scene:
Damian saw inhaler on table and moved coffee away so he wouldn't accidentally knock.
I stared.
“What?”
“Growth.”
I laughed.
No sainthood.
Then Blackthorne recovered partly.
Assets stabilized around 65% of pre-crisis.
Smaller returns.
Less leverage.
Damian became good at investor calls? He was always.
He publicly acknowledged Mercer seed capital in company history.
That was major for self-made myth.
Website:
Founded by Damian Mercer with early backing from Elias Mercer and other investors.
Simple truth.
Then employees.
Profit participation improved.
Naomi Cross remained.
Damian no longer called her traitor.
Then he asked:
“Do you think Grandfather would approve?”
I said:
“He’d find three problems before breakfast.”
Damian smiled.
“Yeah.”
Then:
“Do you think he loved me?”
There again.
“Yes.”
“Why are you sure?”
“Because he spent ridiculous amount of legal engineering trying to keep you from destroying yourself.”
Damian laughed, then cried.
Both.
Then I asked:
“Do you think he loved me?”
Damian answered:
“He let you argue with him.”
True in Elias language.
May you like
Not ideal.
But ours.
