Chapter 10 - One Year Later

One year after wake, Blackthorne still existed.
Smaller.
Less leveraged.
More boring.
Damian hated boring, then learned it paid bills.
Assets under management had fallen by nearly forty percent after redemptions and valuation corrections.
Not dead.
Employees still worked.
Employee trust ownership increased after dilution provisions.
Naomi Cross remained independent chair of risk committee.
Damian returned to investment role under restrictions after regulatory settlement and internal reforms.
He no longer had unilateral authority over valuations.
At first he called it humiliation.
Then one trade went badly.
Risk committee stopped expansion.
He was furious.
Two months later position collapsed further.
Committee saved fund millions.
He sent Naomi:
You were right.
Historic.
Then Mercer Dynamics.
Information barriers implemented.
Foundation/family office separated.
Board independence increased.
My voting trust authority remained but annual review tested my compliance.
I submitted myself.
No exemption.
Then one director asked:
“Why retain family control at all?”
Good question.
I asked same.
Grandfather’s trust allowed conversion after ten years if independent committee and family beneficiaries approved.
Maybe eventually.
I began considering.
Power should not exist merely because inherited.
Then ArcSpan.
We publicly released technical history of failed module, improvements, and correction of my departure narrative.
Not every detail about family leak.
But enough.
My engineering reputation restored partly.
I returned to technical advisory work two days a week.
That made me happier than board meetings.
Then Damian invited me to Blackthorne office.
I almost declined.
He showed conference room.
No giant portrait.
No arrogance? Still some.
On wall:
Risk assumptions may be wrong.
He claimed Naomi made him put it.
I laughed.
Then he said:
“I want you to review Vulcan Array process.”
“Why me?”
“Because your report said no and we read only part that said maybe.”
“Consulting fee?”
He smiled.
“Of course.”
“Market rate.”
“Obviously.”
I took project through Meridian Verification, not family favor.
Review concluded Blackthorne investment process had confirmation bias.
Not fraud.
Human.
They adopted changes.
Then we discussed inhaler.
He had stopped making jokes about asthma.
Good minimum.
Then Celeste.
She began therapy? Could, but not necessary. She did start working with nonprofit? Avoid redemption by charity.
She simply left board life.
Traveled less.
Spent time with grandchildren from her daughter? We don't need.
She invited me lunch.
I went once.
She said:
“Do you wish Elias exposed me six years ago?”
“Yes.”
Immediate.
She flinched.
“Even if it ruined Damian?”
“Consequences earlier might have prevented worse later.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
Then:
“I thought protecting my son meant absorbing his mistakes.”
“That taught him mistakes disappear.”
“Yes.”
Same pattern Grandfather.
Then she said:
“I told him you were weak because I needed him to believe he was stronger.”
“Why?”
“Because he always thought Elias preferred you.”
I stared.
We had mirror jealousy.
I thought Elias preferred Damian.
Damian thought Elias preferred me.
Grandfather’s style made everyone compete.
Celeste cried.
“He was brilliant and terrible at love.”
Maybe.
Then one personal turn.
I began dating? User may not need. Mara story primarily family/business. Could add but not necessary.
Better focus.
Then Samuel retirement.
He asked:
“Do you still want control?”
“No.”
“Good.”
“Why good?”
“People who want it most should worry me.”
Classic.
Then I asked:
“Did you ever disagree with Elias?”
“Constantly.”
“Did he listen?”
“Eventually.”
“Why didn't you stop him sacrificing my reputation?”
Samuel looked down.
“I thought he would repair it quickly.”
“Did you believe secrecy necessary?”
“Yes.”
“Were you wrong?”
“Yes.”
There.
Another adult responsibility.
Then Samuel offered resignation from trust role.
I said:
“Independent committee decides.”
Not personal.
They retained him transition one year then professional successor.
No dynasty attorney.
Then final Elias video segment discovered at end:
He looked tired.
“Mara will be angry at Samuel.”
Correct.
“Samuel will deserve some.”
Samuel groaned.
Then:
“But if she starts collecting apologies instead of building systems, remove her.”
I laughed.
Dead tyrant still lecturing.
Then:
“The family’s problem is not bad people.”
Pause.
“It is that we have spent three generations making private accommodations for conduct that should have met ordinary rules.”
That was exact story.
Private rescue.
Private forgiveness.
Private leaks.
Private settlements.
Ordinary rules absent.
Then:
“Apply ordinary rules.”
That became motto.
May you like
No special punishment.
No special protection.
