Chapter 7 - The Dead Man Who Raised Lily's Name

Eric Warren had never died in the aircraft crash.

The aircraft existed.

The crash happened.

He was simply not aboard.

Jonathan said Eric had spent nine years working through offshore companies, collecting evidence against Meridian.

Jack didn’t trust a word.

“Why would your own son investigate you?”

“Because children mistake inheritance for corruption when they are young.”

Marianne laughed.

“You laundered private enforcement money through charities.”

Jonathan looked at her.

“And you helped build those accounts.”

She went quiet.

No clean heroes.

Then Jonathan explained why Eric warned Rachel to keep Lily away from Jack.

Eric knew Jack was Jonathan’s son.

He discovered it through Meridian DNA records.

If Rachel reunited with Jack, Jonathan would eventually find all three.

So Eric created distance.

But Eric also had another motive.

He believed Lily could prove a financial crime.

“How can a child prove anything?”

Jonathan looked at Jack.

“Because of when she was conceived.”

Rachel became pregnant shortly before Meridian moved $48 million through a trust requiring approval from all living direct heirs of Jonathan Warren.

At the time, Jonathan’s official heirs were Eric and Marcus.

Jack did not legally exist as a son.

Neither did unborn Lily.

Why would that matter?

Because Jonathan allegedly signed a declaration stating he had no other known biological descendants.

If he knowingly lied while already aware of Jack, the trust transfer could be challenged.

If records showed he also knew Rachel carried Jack’s child, the case strengthened.

“Did you know?”

Jonathan stared at Jack.

“I knew Diane had a son.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“Yes.”

He knew.

Before the transfer.

Jonathan had committed financial fraud by concealing Jack’s existence from a trust.

Lily was not valuable because of inheritance alone.

She was evidence that the concealment continued into another generation.

Then Rachel called Marianne.

Panicked.

“Someone’s at the house.”

Jack grabbed the phone.

“Rachel?”

Silence.

Then Lily’s voice.

“Jack?”

His heart stopped.

“Lily, where’s your mom?”

“She told me to hide.”

“Where?”

“In the pantry.”

“Stay there.”

“I can hear a man.”

“Do not come out.”

Then another voice came through the phone.

Male.

Calm.

“Elizabeth?”

Jack stared at Jonathan.

“You said Eric was alive.”

Jonathan’s face changed.

“That’s him.”

Over the phone, Lily whispered:

“He called me Elizabeth.”

Then footsteps approached the pantry.

Jack shouted:

“ERIC!”

The footsteps stopped.

A man picked up Rachel’s phone.

“Jack?”

Jack’s hands shook.

“You go near her—”

“I’m not here for Lily.”

“Where is Rachel?”

Silence.

“ERIC!”

Then Eric said:

“Rachel just learned who David really works for.”

Jack looked at Jonathan.

Eric continued:

“Get Marianne away from my father.”

Jonathan’s expression hardened.

“Why?”

Eric answered:

“Because the motorcycle crash wasn’t meant to kill Jack.”

A pause.

May you like

“It was meant to make Marianne show herself.”

Marianne went pale.
