Chapter 4 - Jack's Sister

Jack left the hospital against medical advice.

He had six stitches near his temple, bruised ribs, and a concussion warning sheet he ignored.

He went straight to Marianne.

She waited inside an abandoned repair shop outside town.

“You knew.”

Jack didn’t bother greeting her.

“You knew Rachel lived.”

“Yes.”

“For nine years.”

“Yes.”

“And Lily.”

Marianne’s silence answered.

Jack kicked a metal chair across the floor.

“How could you?”

“Because you would have gone after them.”

“They were my family.”

“And David would have followed.”

Jack stared.

“You decided for me.”

“Yes.”

The answer contained no apology.

That enraged him more.

Then Marianne explained what happened after the motel explosion.

Rachel survived.

Pregnant.

Terrified.

Eric Warren, a former Meridian driver, moved her.

Marianne altered records.

Birth certificate.

Hospital admission.

Financial history.

She created Lily Warren before Lily was born so the identity would already exist when Rachel delivered.

That explained David’s comment.

Elizabeth Warren came first.

“Elizabeth?”

Jack asked.

Rachel originally named their unborn daughter Elizabeth Cole.

Jack’s surname at birth was Cole.

Not Mercer.

Not Hale.

Cole.

When Rachel disappeared, Marianne built the identity Elizabeth Warren as a placeholder.

After Lily was born, Rachel changed the child’s everyday name to Lily but kept Elizabeth buried in older records.

“Why Lily?”

Marianne smiled faintly.

“Jack’s mother loved lilies.”

He sat down.

That nearly broke him.

Then:

“Why is David after her now?”

Marianne’s expression changed.

“Because Meridian learned Elizabeth Warren is active.”

“How?”

“School enrollment database.”

Nine years of careful hiding disrupted by a routine digital records modernization project.

Old and new identity files cross-referenced.

Elizabeth Warren.

Lily Warren.

Same birth date.

Same mother.

Duplicate identity alert.

Someone at Meridian saw it.

“David?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Marianne hesitated.

“The people above David.”

Jack stared.

“I thought David ran Meridian.”

“He runs operations.”

“Who owns it?”

Marianne looked at him.

“You never knew?”

Jack stood.

“Tell me.”

She pulled out an old corporate filing.

Meridian Response had been created fifteen years earlier.

Founder:

Jonathan Warren.

Jack frowned.

“Warren?”

Rachel’s fake surname.

Eric’s surname.

Marianne nodded.

“Eric didn’t give Rachel a random identity.”

“What are you saying?”

“He brought her back into his family.”

Jack’s blood ran cold.

“Eric owned Meridian?”

“His father did.”

Then Marianne showed him a photograph.

Eric Warren.

David Hale.

Jonathan Warren.

Standing together at a company event.

Jack whispered:

“Rachel trusted one of them to hide her from the others.”

“Yes.”

“Which means…”

Marianne finished:

May you like

“Lily wasn’t only hidden from you.”

“She was hidden inside the family that wanted her found.”
