Chapter 11 - Three Sons

Jonathan finally told the entire family structure.

Or the part he claimed was complete.

He had three biological sons.

Marcus Warren.

Eric Warren.

Jack Cole.

Marcus was legitimate.

Raised wealthy.

Prepared to inherit.

Eric was legitimate too, but rebelled.

Jack was born from Jonathan’s affair with Diane Cole and hidden.

Jonathan had never publicly acknowledged him because doing so would have endangered his marriage, business control and trust agreements.

Cowardice dressed as complexity.

Jack asked:

“Did Eric know?”

“For years.”

That explained why Eric helped Rachel so fiercely.

She was carrying his brother’s child.

But he never told Jack.

Because he feared Jonathan.

And because he wanted control over the situation himself.

Then Jack understood David’s message.

YOUR BROTHER ISN’T SAFE.

David had Lily and Eric.

Not necessarily as captives.

The photograph could have been taken during transport.

They needed confirmation.

Law enforcement became involved.

Marianne surrendered part of what she knew through an attorney.

Jonathan reluctantly provided company vehicle tracking.

A black Meridian SUV was heading toward an old private airfield.

Jack wanted to follow.

Police told him not to interfere.

He almost ignored them.

Rachel called from another phone.

“Jack.”

“I’m coming.”

“No.”

“Rachel—”

“If Lily gets you too, she loses both parents at once.”

That stopped him.

Parent.

The word hit differently.

Rachel continued:

“You don’t prove you love her by charging into danger.”

Jack looked away.

For most of his life, action meant protection.

Now staying put required more courage.

The airfield operation happened without him.

David’s SUV was found.

Empty.

Then security cameras showed something unexpected.

Lily walked willingly beside Eric.

David followed.

No visible force.

They boarded no plane.

Instead they entered an abandoned hangar.

Police surrounded it.

Inside, they found Lily.

Safe.

Eric.

Injured.

David.

Gone.

A hidden maintenance tunnel led away.

Lily ran to Rachel when she arrived.

Jack waited several yards back.

He didn’t touch her until she stepped toward him.

Then she hugged him around the waist.

Jack broke.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For missing everything.”

Lily whispered:

“You didn’t know.”

Children again.

Clearer than adults.

Then Eric was taken to the hospital.

He had a deep cut on his arm.

Before they moved him, he asked to speak with Jack.

“David wasn’t taking Lily.”

“What?”

“He was taking me.”

“Why?”

“Because of Marcus.”

Jack frowned.

“What does Marcus have to do with this?”

Eric stared at Jonathan.

“Everything.”

Marcus Warren—the respectable eldest son who had barely appeared in anyone’s story—was the person David truly worked for.

Jonathan went still.

“No.”

Eric laughed weakly.

“You really still think you run Meridian?”

Marcus had spent years quietly taking control.

He fed federal investigators selected information against Jonathan.

He encouraged David to go independent.

He wanted Jonathan, Eric and Jack discredited.

Why?

To become sole uncontested heir.

Then Jack asked:

“Why Lily?”

Eric’s face tightened.

“Because Marcus has a daughter too.”

No one knew.

A teenage girl.

Hidden.

And if Warren succession became contested, Lily’s existence threatened her position.

Jack whispered:

“So this was inheritance.”

Eric shook his head.

“Not only.”

May you like

Marcus’s daughter and Lily had the same mother.

Rachel.
